Too often parents feel that they need to get the kids involved in every sport & activity they see or let them quit at the first sign difficulty. However, "Inconsistent" Taekwondo training can be detrimental to a child's overall progress and skill development. Taekwondo requires dedication, discipline, and regular practice to master the techniques and principles. And guess what, they experience ups & downs as well along the way. They learn to deal with it as well, but they can't if they're told its okay to give up every time there's a negative experience. When training is inconsistent, practitioners may struggle to build muscle memory and reflexes, hindering their ability to execute techniques effectively during real-life combat situations. Additionally, sporadic training can lead to knowledge gaps and an incomplete understanding of the art, preventing students from reaching their full potential. Moreover, without consistent training, it becomes challenging to maintain physical fitness, flexibility, and endurance necessary for optimal performance as well as seeing their peers advance in rank when they don’t. These words have been ingrained in me since my Taekwondo journey began. But they're not just a part of a martial arts ritual that we do at the beginning of every class; they're principles that guide me in life. Courtesy, loyalty, and respect—these values extend far beyond the tatami. They're the foundation of how we interact with others, learn from our mentors, and nurture the next generation. As I've grown, I've come to appreciate the importance of these principles in every aspect of life. And as the class or event concludes, "Sir / Ma'am, I shall live with Perseverance in the Spirit of Taekwondo, having Honor with others, Integrity within myself, and Self Control in my actions." Perseverance, honor, integrity, and self-control—they're not just words; they're a way of life. They remind me that true strength lies in our character and how we treat those around us. 🎉 Publication Announcement! 📖 Congratulations to our Masters research student, Daniel Corcoran, from the SCU Combat Research Lab, for his recemt publication: "Impact Force and Velocities for Kicking Strikes in Combat Sports: A Literature Review" in the journal, Sports. This work presents a comprehensive review of kicking strikes across various combat sports like Taekwondo, Karate, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, and Mixed Martial Arts. Analyzing 88 different studies, reviewing measurement methods, velocities, and impact forces associated with these dynamic strikes. Key Insights: 🔍 Analysis: The research highlights a wide array of methodologies used to measure the speed and force of kicking strikes. 📈 Findings: Notably, the roundhouse kick was identified with the highest velocity at 18.3 m/s, and the side kick showed the greatest impact force at 9015 N. 💪 Influential Factors: The study also sheds light on the importance of technical proficiency, lower body strength, flexibility, and effective mass in optimizing kick performance. This manuscript offers valuable insights for practitioners, coaches, and combat sports enthusiasts. Understanding these elements is key to refining training techniques and enhancing athlete safety. Clips From Saturday at Master Changs Martial Arts’ belt ceremonies. I, tested for the first time, and went from white to yellow stripe. Julianna, tested for her green belt, officially joining her brother and sister in the green-blue class. I am going to miss my little partner in the beginning White-Yellow class! But, I’m going to work hard to catch up! Starting Taekwondo at age 49 is a humbling experience. It is a lot of fun and I love every bit of it. The humbling part is being a beginner. After nearly half a century of living, there aren’t many things I can say I’m at the level of a beginner. To be a beginner is a great reminder we all start somewhere. Even masters had to have first belt test, possibly roll their ankle and miss a move in front of a crowd of strangers. Being a beginner at something is wonderful, especially when you can share that start with your own child. Don’t be afraid to look silly. Don’t be afraid to be “the only” in class. Don’t let awkwardness stop you from starting over, starting a new project, a new career path, a new (insert blank). One class. One move. One test. One stripe. As some of you know(or don't know) I've been doing martial arts for several years. I entered into the International Chinese Martial Arts Tournament earlier this month and got absolutely demolished, despite training really hard for it. There was definitely some tomfoolery that happened at the tournament. The tournament organizers combined Novice (0-1 years), Beginner (1-2 years, me), and Intermediate (3-5 years) into one division for weapon and hand forms for some ungodly reason. I lost to an intermediate student by literally .001, mostly because he was doing a more advanced weapon and hand form that I haven't even learned yet. For sparring, it was even worse. None of the "beginners" were actual beginners. One guy was an ex-mma fighter with over 20 years experience, but a "beginner" in kung fu. Another guy was a black belt in Taekwondo, but a "beginner" in kung fu. Why am I posting this on LinkedIn? In a lot of ways this story translates into what happens in business. I can't control the fact that organizers of the tournament scuffed the divisions or that my opponents basically lied about their experience. I can only control what I did. Could I have trained harder? Absolutely. Did I do everything I could to prepare myself? Probably not. Now I am using this experience as a catalyst to prepare me for next year and training even harder. TLDR; Control what you can control. If you did everything you could in your power and you still are not hitting your metrics, then you can walk away with your head high. Wanted to share a quick personal accomplishment this evening: I finally received a second stripe on my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu blue belt. I’ve been in martial arts since I was 10-years-old; I started with a basis in TaeKwonDo/Karate that led into a mixed martial arts system called SaJiDo (where I earned my black belt) then eventually into my current BJJ journey. Many hobbies and passions outside of work can translate to greater success in your career, but few translate as noticeably as martial arts. Training alongside teammates builds a sense of camaraderie that can lead to better team building at the office. Intense sparring sessions, fighting against what sometimes seem like insurmountable odds, leads to more discipline and motivation to overcome the challenges you’ll face in the workplace. Most importantly, you build dedication towards excellence and growth, to continue pushing for that next belt, that next promotion. The lesson is to keep training, don’t shy away from the challenges that come your way, and never stop growing in whatever path you take. #brazilianjiujitsu #martialarts #careergrowth

向跆拳道和空手道跆拳道運動員教授太極拳（西方的太極拳），如果我告訴他們太極拳來自中國，他們當時都會放棄（很多人這樣做），所以我將其作為韓國集中練習呈現。 它奏效了，我的學生「神奇地」開始贏得許多戰鬥和形式比賽。 當然，我教太極拳的時間更長，從1988年開始，但從1985年開始作為熱身運動 Teaching Taijiquan (Taichi in west) to Taekwondo and Karate Kickboxing athletes , if i told them it come from China they will all quit at that time (many did), so i presented it as Korean concentration exercises. And it worked,my students "magically" started to win many fights and forms competitions. Of course i teach Taijiquan longer time, since 1988 but incorporated as warm ups since 1985

It is what lies beneath these techniques that becomes my guide to better living. The physical and mental benefits are innumerable. As a woman in my mid-sixties, I am keenly aware of how the body and mind slow down and begin their betrayal. Each morning is met with an invasion of increasing aches and pains. At the same time, cognitive functioning is also being assaulted by Father Time. It would be so easy to give in to these negative influences. However, when I step onto the dojang floor, all the defeatist thoughts and physical discomfort slip away with the combination of physical and mental training.
