Do you want to learn leadership skills to thrive in a changing climate? You have a few more days to submit your application for the Enable leadership program, with the closing date extended until Monday 13 May. This part-time program offers an opportunity for agricultural professionals to cultivate self-aware leadership skills and the mindset required to adapt to the impacts of a rapidly changing climate. The main learnings reported by 2023 participants include a greater awareness of leadership strategies, being aware of their ability to control or influence change, appreciating difference, communicating with different people, and managing staff and projects. The Enable leadership program is a joint initiative of Rural Business Tasmania and TIA, delivered with funding from the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. The Kentucky Agricultural Leadership Program, after receiving a record 140 nominations, has chosen 22 candidates for its 14th class! The program provides young farmers and individuals working in agriculture-related fields with an intensive leadership development experience. We can observe here the NSW Minister from Agriculture and Fisheries being questioned about a breed of fish that she decided on banning retrieval of- the Groper fish. A decision that lies squarely within her purview and authority- and that some might argue was a good one. Irrespective, if you are going to strike the gavel, you ought to at least have a rudimentary understanding on the topic. Understandably, you trust that the tacit knowledge drawn upon by subordinate managers serves you well- but that does not excuse one from doing a few minutes of homework on the subject. Our Green Communities Leadership Institute (GCLI) team recently caught-up with GCLI co-founder Dana Karcher to learn more about her work at The Davey Tree Expert Company and why they're invested in growing the GCLI community. GCLI: Can you tell us a little about The Davey Tree Expert Company (Davey)? DANA: Davey was started in 1880 by John Davey in Kent, OH. We are the 9th largest employee owned company in the country. Our work is based in science and innovation. Whether our employees climb and prune trees or work in urban forestry with cities and towns, we look to the latest in science and innovation to meet our client’s needs. GCLI: What does “next-level leadership” mean to you, and what kinds of leaders do you think the green industry will need in the future? DANA: Next level leadership has always meant not doing the things the way we have done them before. We're constantly looking at different ways to solve problems, bring synergy, and how to lead. Leadership is a process, it is not a stagnant thing. One of the things that I love at Davey is that we encourage leadership at all levels. This includes in our working environment, or in the communities in which we live or serve. That is shown by our commitment to supporting our company leaders whether they are teaching 4th graders about the environment, planting trees with citizens for Arbor Day, or even leading at the international level through groups like the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). For the future, we need to grow leaders that are willing to try new innovations, new solutions, and be flexible in their approach to challenges and opportunities.

We've found seven skills to be vital for a servant leader: Empowerment -- We aim to nurture our people so they can make decisions for themselves. Self-awareness -- Humility is key to building relationships amongst our team, and being mindful of their situation and what they can contribute. Deep Listening -- We try to be conscious of our team members' real needs and assist in elevating them whenever possible. Stewardship -- With a commitment to our vision, we take care of what has been given to us and take responsibility in an emergency. Trust -- We must be transparent, honest, and approachable about our needs and goals, so our team can trust us with the work, no matter how difficult it becomes. A Vision -- Without a strong, clear, and consistent vision, we cannot convince our team members of the importance of the tasks at hand. Earlier this week, AERS and ACRM faculty Dr. Christopher McIntosh, Dr. Hernan Tejeda, and Dr. Xiaoli Liao Etienne had the opportunity to attend the Larry Branen Idaho Ag Summit organized by Leadership Idaho Agriculture. While there, they were able to meet with legislators, attend informational sessions, and network with industry leaders. The theme of this year's summit, "Seeds of Change: Navigating the Future of Idaho Agriculture," resonated strongly with the ACRM program.
