It was a pleasure to share the stage with the great Quentin L. Messer Jr., President and CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and Chair of the Michigan Strategic Fund - insightful and inspiring words on his philosophy and personal journey that have powered his effective leadership style!
The program this year was powerful! Especially the messages around listening to one another and the importance of connection (the huddle) to do bigger and better in all spaces.
Thank you to everyone involved, from the planning team to those on stage 👏👏👏
My Cause My Cleats is an National Football League (NFL) initiative that allows players to express their commitment to the causes that are most important to them. This year, I will be highlighting partner organization, World Vision USA, and the collective work we have done to provide clean water access globally.
To enhance the existing MCMC initiative, I thought it would be important and powerful to bring leaders together to discuss #sustainability and impact and its relation to sport. The topics of clean energy, accessible resources, reducing carbon emissions, environmental protection, and climate change have been moving into sharper focus. The sports industry is both a driver and reflector of societal thinking. Athlete activism makes headlines and brands align themselves with social movements to tap into a younger consumer base and in their commitment to social and global responsibility. Giving more exposure to these conversations opens leagues and corporations to new potential. Together, we can discuss sustainable solutions within these industries and our collective commitments to organizational and executable strategies.
Today, I will welcome Erik A. Moses, Kristen Fulmer, Christina Hovestadt, Christopher Boone and Dr. Sanjeev Khagram (with special remarks virtually from Fiona Morgan!) for a panel discussion on sports, sustainability and impact at Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University.
If you are in the Valley, the conversation kicks off at 4pm and we would love to have you. Register here: https://lnkd.in/gFNRhKvS
Lessons in Leadership from Nick Saban 🏆
First off, this picture is old.
Like 2019 old, back when I spoke to the Alabama Crimson Tide. 🗓️
But these lessons from the legend are timeless, in my opinion.
Over my 12 year career in sports, I had the pleasure of observing and indirectly assisting Saban on about ten different occasions.
Here’s what I learned 👇
🏈 Protect The Head Coach
I had no less than five prep meetings and touch points with support staffers to ensure I was aware of the standards and expectations of the program before taking the stage.
They knew more about me than I knew about myself. By the time you get to Saban, you’ve been fully vetted, so he’s extremely welcoming to you knowing his team has done their jobs.
🏈 Time is of The Essence
When they told me I had 30 minutes, they meant I had those 1800 seconds exactly, and not a millisecond more.
By the time I’d reached 29 minutes and 50 seconds, they had already begun switching over to the next meeting’s slides as I was closing out my talk.
At 30 minutes on the dot, I was signaled to exit the room as the position meetings were beginning. True story.
🏈 How You Do Anything…
…is how you do everything. Between my time at the Peach Bowl and later the CFP National Championship, I saw ‘Bama at least once a year for nearly a decade.
One thing I always noticed is that everyone on staff was constantly moving.
Like I never once saw anyone standing around and wondering what they were supposed to be doing. I’m talking down to the interns & graduate assistants.
Also, you couldn’t distinguish who the starters were from the rest of the team, unless you knew their names and faces.
Every single player got off the bus looking like they were ready for absolute war, from the first to the last.
Heck, I remember they were once WINNING 24-0 at halftime in a kickoff game, and the whole team was yelling this as they went into the tunnel:
“Aight fellas, it’s 0-0. Back to work!” 🤯
Saban didn’t even have to say a word.
Now that’s culture. 🏆
Which of these lessons resonate most with you?
🖍️ Keep coloring outside the lines.

Step Into the Experience: A Day with the Terps!
Hosted at the Jones-Hill House, home of the Maryland Terrapins football, on Saturday, March 4, 2024, we embarked on an extraordinary journey with the 100 Black Men of Greater Washington, DC, our Saturday Leadership Academy, Collegiate 100, and parents. It was a day filled with excitement, inspiration, and unforgettable moments at the University of Maryland, hosted by @Terpsfootball.
Immersive Beginnings:
Our day kicked off with exhilarating highlight videos, reliving the Terrapins' triumphs from the recent football season, including their remarkable victory in the 2023 TransPerfect Music City Bowl. The energy was palpable as we cheered for our team's success!
Unexpected Surprises:
We were in for a treat when Head Coach Michael Locksley @coachlocks himself graced us with his presence, offering warm greetings and insightful remarks. Our youth even had the chance to engage in a Q&A session with Coach Locksley, making the experience all the more memorable.
Guided Exploration:
Splitting into groups, we embarked on immersive tours of the state-of-the-art facility, led by UMD Terrapin student interns. From the cutting-edge training rooms to the in-door practice field, every corner was filled with inspiration and possibility.
Empowering Messages:
Coaches shared invaluable insights on character development, emphasizing the significance of integrity and resilience in achieving our dreams. Their passionate words resonated deeply, reminding us of the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.
A Moment of Inspiration:
Wrapping up our day, we were honored to hear from Preston Brown, @pgreat81 WR Coach for Delaware State University. His heartfelt speech about overcoming obstacles and finding purpose in coaching left us feeling empowered and motivated to chase our dreams.
Together, we can create moments of inspiration and impact that will last a lifetime.

I'm deeply grateful for the incredible opportunity to be a panelist at the HBA Annual Conference in Chicago, where we talked about "Expanding Horizons: Global Assignments to Advancement."
This experience taught me that stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing vulnerability can reveal passions I never knew existed. Speaking on stage felt natural, authentic, and deeply personal.
Helping others take steps closer to their goals was an honor, and I'm thankful for this transformative experience.
I am already looking forward to the next opportunity 🙏 #hbaimpact#hbaac23
What do many C-suite executives have in common? Most of them played a sport in college – and they continue to apply what they learned on their teams to their careers. Here, we discuss three lessons from the field and how anyone – even if you didn’t play a sport – can benefit from them.

Tomorrow I’ll be going up to Warwick to join some of the biggest research legends in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the foundation of Millward Brown.
Whilst Millward Brown logo no longer exists, its impact on the industry is long-lasting.
To me, its success was down to 3 simple things:
1/ Knowing who they are & what they do
-> Experts in advertising & Brand research. Nothing less. Nothing more.
2/ Truly people-centric.
-> From parties to career progressions. Anyone you speak to will talk fondly of the culture.
3/ Purposefully innovating.
-> Applying the good-old 70:20:10. Not getting lured by shining things yet opened to experimentation and investment in relevant technologies.
I don’t know many companies that do ALL 3 of these things well, even today.
But its main contribution to the marketing world, and its legacy, is in its unwavering advocacy of the value of BRAND.
They understood early the importance of Brand Equity and whilst the analytical models might have changed over time, the ethos stayed the same – companies with strong brand equity grow (faster).
And as long as the debate about Conversion vs. Brand equity in marketing/advertising continues, there is a role for Millward Brown (even if now under the KANTAR Insights umbrella).
