We know progress is possible because supportive housing organizations helped rehouse 27,951people in a single year – an all-time record for LA County’s homeless response system. Greater investment in affordable housing is the key to reducing homelessness!

56% of social housing tenants still don't know what help is available. The disconnect of needing and *getting* the right help is the focus of our CEO Rebecca White's talk at Chartered Institute of Housing South West conference and exhibition. Yes, we need more social homes. Yes, we need an increase in benefit amounts in line with the cost of living. And we need to deliver engaging and fun cost of living support to enable people to stay in their homes — true homelessness prevention. #SouthWest2023 #bristolhousing #ukhousing #safeandsecurehome https://lnkd.in/eshHBTV8

It's incredibly helpful when communities can learn from others doing good work. Once faced with a ballooning unsheltered population, Houston is now a national beacon of success for eradicating homelessness. Housing first + support services is how we can solve homelessness in San Diego, too. #housingfirst #housingsolveshomelessness #homelessnessissolvable https://lnkd.in/gEnn2m8v

We are seeing more folks leave homelessness than ever, something we should be ✨ celebrating ✨ IF we weren't also seeing the inflow (up 24%) into homelessness grow. The biggest reason is fairly simple, which is America is STRUGGLING; 1/2 of us renters can't pay the rent. Of course more and more folks will become homeless and they will continue to become homeless because we are unwilling to do the Most Important Thing: Subsidize rents to what people earn. Until this glorious day we are going to have to work harder to keep as many folks as possible from losing their homes. Money solves problems and we need to make sure more folks have access to it. Prevention and Guaranteed Income are two proven strategies that work. There is nothing stopping us (really, it is up to us) from doing more of the right thing.
Our system partners connected nearly 4,500 formerly homeless individuals in Santa Clara County to stable housing last year – the most housing placements in a single year ever. At the same time, the rate of people entering homelessness is growing. We need increased funding to scale #HomelessnessPrevention strategies. Government & Technology’s Top 25 for 2024 Bringing advocacy and innovation to the forefront for an accessible future. Public Affairs Specialist, U.S. Access Board. PhD student: Organizational Leadership
All the yes on this 🙌. As someone who has faced both addiction and housing insecurities, I assure you trauma is the gateway. I do believe because we do not talk about it or share of how recovery is possible because of shame and stigma, how hope is not gone, the cycles continue. It is why I recover outloud. No human should ever be seen as a blight because they are experiencing homelessness. They are mothers, fathers, siblings, children. They ARE Philadelphians. When we say “let’s cleanup our streets and rid the neighborhood of the unhoused so we don’t have to look at it” as we’re seeing this harmful rhetoric growing recently, you are talking about your neighbors, someone’s child, someone’s family, a fellow Philadelphian. When we say those in addiction or experiencing homelessness are unworthy or unwanted, you forget that we DO recover, that if there is breath in our lungs, hope is not lost. 8 years and 2 months of life I’ve gotten to live in recovery, so when you see them as disposable, you see me, this PhD researcher, mother, daughter, sister, and nationally recognized executive leader as disposable. I AM the face of addiction. Imagine what might be possible if we all had equitable access to care and resources? I long for a city that cares for ALL of its citizens. Instead of “ridding ourselves” of the unhoused let’s rid ourselves of the barriers to healthcare, mental health services, food security, housing and employment. Human beings are not disposable elements to be swept away for your comfort. Sweep our streets of the inequities, not people. #weDOrecover #NotThrowawayPeople #addressTheTrauma

Although FRAC is technically right, if you follow the root a little deeper you’ll find that it is the lack of a living wage and an inability to accumulate wealth that translates to housing instability and food insecurity for many. Without good jobs that have benefits which include things like healthcare, dental care, access to behavioral health, retirement benefits, childcare and, increasingly, elder care, means families can get wiped out financially with one small thing. For instance, a root canal can be $1,500- even getting your teeth cleaned can be out of reach for families- so many things come before food! Paid for aide for a family member with dementia? Can a mother work without reliable childcare? The whole society benefits when we support each other fully.
Housing instability is a root cause of hunger. In honor of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, join FRAC this Thursday, November 16 in drawing attention to the intersections of hunger and housing instability and identifying key housing policies that promote equity and opportunities to engage. https://lnkd.in/eJ-gZbz5
