So true, Livvy. What a great bunch of boys (actually, young men) to work with. And whilst we use the word 'work', a key aspect of the success of the team over a number of years is that it remained fun and they got to do it with their mates. That's something that shouldn't be overlooked in a business context - clearly, there are products / services to be sold, clients to be satisfied (or maybe delighted!) and goals to be achieved, but it's pretty hard to achieve those important things if it feels like a constant grind. Research out of the UK last year showed that many people now spend more waking hours working that they spend with their loved ones - scary! If that's the case, surely we want to be doing something we enjoy (maybe even love!), working we people we genuinely like. Life is too short to be enduring our working life. Let's remind ourselves of the great Confucius quote: 'Choose a job you love, and you'll never have to work a day in your life'. BTW - an important point Livvy didn't mention. Her contribution as Team Manager, with a strong emphasis on planning and clear communication, enabled the coaches and players to focus their energies onto the areas that created the best chance for success. So it was a real team effort by all involved to achieve the success we had. Bring on next season!

What was your biggest challenge transitioning into a leadership role in your industry? ✏️ Pivoting & Patience! I realise that we have been taught that it is negative to constantly change your mind, I agree that it becomes more challenging in certain environments where as a leader immediate decisiveness is key ie; in football you only have particular amount of time (90min) to meet your target which is winning but that's not the whole story, it's only part of it. In order to win you need a balanced team, full of different abilities (11 Messi's would never win a football match - even though I am sure they would be entertaining to watch) Budget's come into consideration. You might manage a team that has a huge transfer budget - but end up overspending in the transfer market because rival clubs know how much money you have and will raise the price. I am a Liverpool fan and when Jurgen Klopp arrived (then the most sought 'available' manager in the world) he arrived at a Liverpool side low on confidence and slipping down the premiership. He was close to the transfer window but didn't immediately start spending to get other players in - he played the players he had and worked on building their confidence and their style of play. In half a season he managed to get Liverpool to reach 2 cup finals (which they actually lost) but the main thing was that Liverpool had regained their confidence again and enjoyed playing. Now that Liverpool side barely resemble his first team after around 7 years. But this rebuilding of the side with the players he 'needed' came as part of a 'project' which delivered practically trophy within 5 years of joining. There was Pivoting & Patience and eventually he succeeded. When building your own company, especially during 'bootstrapping' period of working out what your start up actually is, there has been a lot of pivoting but due to a strong central idea or mission however far you pivot away from your core ideas - if you have that 'central' idea or mission - you always find your way back. The most positive outcome for your confidence is that it's 'ok to test your concept - you will not get it right straight away and actually it's not about being 'right' - it's more about if you are serving a purpose and making progress in attempting to do so. Sometimes in reaching those solutions not everything will go as planned. Being a leader is partly about what happens when this happens and how you react, which is even more crucial.

The Art of Negotiation Came across an interesting read today and it was about the highest-paid Athlete at the time Derek Sanderson. In 1972 Derek Sanderson became the highest-paid athlete signing for the Philadelphia Blazers New World Hockey Association. Now earning a multi-million dollar contract at that time was unheard of so this got me interested to get into how this happened and why. The Short Answer of it : Never Bargain Against Yourself but most importantly create more value in what you do that exceeds a monetary expectation and everything else will follow through. EVEN THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME NEEDS A COACH Last month as Novak Djokovic secured his 24th Grand Slam, I cannot help to wonder why he still needs a coach. Lionel Messi works with many coaches, Micheal Jordan too, and Usain Bolt included. Just like sports,in today's corporate organization, coaches are required to bring the best out of employees, whether he/she is a CEO or junior developer. If you are a board member or shareholder or investors facing stagnant growth to your company's revenue or profits, look into having your company's top management being coached. Top management that thinks they know it all, is akin to a professional player that thinks he or she knows it all. Progress stops there and regression starts there as well with this kind of mindset. #Coach #ChangeManagement

What Roger Federer told Dartmouth College students about failure. Roger played 1,526 singles matches in his career. He won roughly 80% of those. Guess how many points he won? - -- ---- ------- ---------- ------------- On average, he won 54% of his points. If a world-renowned tennis player wins roughly half their points, it means most tennis players (even the best) have to become quite comfortable with losing. This applies to life as well. You need to put forth your best effort for every point. You need to play to win. But once that point is over, you need to (very quickly), move on. If you dwell on every single failure, mistake, or victory, you will miss your next chance. This does not mean minimizing victories or ignoring lessons from defeats.
