I recently spoke with the Founders of Solstice, Steph Speirs & Sandhya Murali, who met in business school at MIT after working in off-grid solar in places like India, Pakistan & Peru. This will make for interesting listening with respect to the Welsh Government’s current heat strategy consultation. The strategy states, categorically, that: “hydrogen is unlikely to have a significant role in supplying heat to buildings.” And, like the NIC report, it places huge expectations on electrification and heat pumps to deliver 24/7/365 heat in Wales. (Despite, for starters, regular powercuts from storms in Wales. Also, raw materials are outside of scope for the strategy which is difficult to understand given the fundamental demands on copper, aluminium and other stuff to deliver the required networks and wiring. And in the face of looming global supply chain issues and their knock-on affect on costs.) The strategy has implications beyond Wales, as it aims to influence UK policy-making. Realtime update from me since this podcast interview was done just a couple of months ago. We're seeing another supply chain squeeze happening globally for components, caused not by pandemic logistics gaps but by a demand surge since the launch of both the US Inflation Reduction Act and Singapore, EU and other H2 first mover National Strategies. Australian State and Federal governments have to act now to support Australian SME manufacturers jump in to fill the gap across a wide range of in demand components. The global energy transition is going to run every existing manufacturer right to max capacity. This climate hardware squeeze was something experts thought would happen in 2025-2026 but we're seeing sovereign priorities in other countries push Australian buyers/deployment projects down the priority list, *today*, stretching lead times on component purchases from 8 to 16 weeks (already slow) to 30-70 weeks (unfeasible), and in one component we ordered, the update is that the timeframe is now *indefinite*. Truly bonkers stuff. We have to respond. We'll be working closely within our advanced manufacturing clusters in NSW and Victoria, with SoMAC CRC, and with the rapid prototyping capabilities at a number of the universities we collaborate with, in order to close this supply chain gap so Australia's decarb plans don't get completely derailed. Rux Energy will be able to drive tactical solutions for trials and demonstrators for us and our partners. Strategic manufacturing for scale deployment requires direct support, since Australia has a steep learning curve to traverse regarding Manufacturing 4.0 implementation and supply chain optimisation, both major blockers to Australian domestic decarbonisation. We're trying to keep our colleagues in various governmental departments aware of the oncoming storm. We're also rapidly building our friend-shoring relationships in Singapore, USA and UK, through which we could (hopefully) build mutually beneficial mates-rates and delivery prioritisation. And we'll be sharing our learnings from these international clean-technology partnerships in 2024 and 2025 to help build ecosystem wide transition velocity.
