Today we honour and celebrate the remarkable contributions and cultures of Indigenous peoples. As we join our community in celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day today, we recognize that we are home to a vibrant, talented, and growing Indigenous population – one which our economic growth depends. Today and everyday we remain committed to strengthening our relationships with our Indigenous partners and communities, creating space for increased economic opportunities for current and future Indigenous generations and moving further down the path towards economic reconciliation. A major thank you to the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Network (EDIN), along with the City of Regina for putting together an amazing event today. Not to mention the incredible performances, speakers, vendors, and all who made today so special.

Today we have the opportunity to stand with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and add our voice to theirs, in a moment of unity that will change the landscape of this great country that we are all blessed to call home, into the future. We have a once in a generation opportunity, the first time since 1967, when 90.77 per cent of Australian voters voted ‘Yes’ to change the constitution to recognise Aboriginal people as part of the Australian population, to take the next step and lift up First Nations people, for the first time in recent history to where they rightfully belong, which is respected, valued and most importantly heard. Equity and Equality are two very different things. Equity requires a different approach, where acceptance of the problem is the first step and a willingness to do things differently, being what we really need as the catalyst for meaningful change. A First Nations Voice to parliamemt provides equity, by allowing Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people to consult to government, on issues that affect their communities to drive better outcomes. How could this not be the right thing to do. Please remember that when you are at the polling booth filling out your form. Australia is afterall, the country of the Fair Go

Today, August 9th is International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. Instituted by the United Nations in 1994, this day promotes and protects Indigenous human rights. SECURE is proud to support Indigenous peoples and we developed a framework for our Indigenous relations policy based on three pillars: 1. Community engagement 2. Employment and capacity building 3. Economic inclusion (partnerships, joint ventures, equity participation) Our three pillars reflect the value we place on relationships and partnerships with Indigenous communities. In 2022, we spent 6 million dollars with 49 Indigenous suppliers and our operations included 19 partnership agreements. SECURE is dedicated to maintaining and developing strong relationships with Indigenous communities as an important element of truth and reconciliation. At Inventures 2024, we were joined by Carol Wildcat of Ermineskin Cree Nation and Lynn Smith of Peavine Metis Settlement to discuss building trust between Indigenous nations and institutions. The discussion moved from taking a personalized approach to Indigenous community engagement, fostering long-term and mutually beneficial relationships, and how fruitful partnerships between institutions and nations can help create a better, more sustainable future. At NAIT, we respect the individuality of Indigenous communities and ensure that we walk beside them to help them achieve their training and applied research goals. Together we are building trust, sharing knowledge and creating impact. nait.li/3xILXIz
