The newly launched JKT2A Data Center in Jakarta will support a capacity of 12MW of critical IT load. The seven-story JKT2A facility incorporates air-cooling systems, robust physical security measures, and multiple redundant power sources to ensure maximum uptime and reliability. Yasuo Suzuki, Executive Vice President, Managing Director, Japan, and APAC believes it to be a game-changer for Indonesia. The campus also boasts a huge network with connections to more than 150 telcos, internet service providers, and fiber optic providers, and houses major cloud edges and financial services, including digital payment gateways. The data centre boom in Malaysia is a double-edged sword. While it's exciting for the economy, its sustainability raises concerns. Data centres are energy guzzlers, and Malaysia's hot climate only amplifies the challenge. Renewable energy and water conservation are definitely crucial solutions, but we need to take a broader view and consider the looming threat of power shortages. With a surge in data centers on the horizon, Malaysia's power grid might struggle. Reduced gas price subsidies will inevitably lead to higher electricity costs. Additionally, while solar power is a great option, its capacity might not be enough for the massive energy demands of data centers, especially considering our continued reliance on coal-fired plants. Remember, a massive land area would be needed for solar panels to just supplement a single hyperscale data center's needs. The focus on green data centre practices is commendable. However, a more comprehensive strategy is needed. This should involve investing in a diverse renewable energy portfolio that goes beyond just solar, exploring options like bioenergy power. Modernising the power grid is also key to handle increased capacity and effectively integrate renewable energy sources. With the rapid growth of data centres, there is a growing lack of professional resources in the region to meet the demand. In addition, the drive for sustainability and net zero carbon are adding on more challenges to the limited resources planning and designing data centres. There is also the need to address the rapidly evolving IT technologies and data centres have to be future ready for these changes. This is making the news round in Southeast Asia this week. 谷歌 is planning to invest US$2 billion on data centres, cloud infrastructure, and AI development in Malaysia. Meanwhile, the neighbouring Singapore launched a green data centre initiative to support increasing demand for AI and computing. It aims to add additional 300MW of capacity in the near term, the majority of which will potentially come from renewable energy. Data centres consume 7% of electricity in the city state and its demand is projected to rise rapidly as they are used to house large amounts of data needed to train AI models. The short term effect is increased demand for power which has to be balanced with environmental consideration. This presents an opportunity for green energy investments in South East region, one which multinational investors and developers are able to capitalize. Having captive demand once these newly built data centres turn online is desirable and, indeed, lucrative.
