We are pleased to announce that Maynooth University and Dundalk Institute of Technology have strengthened their strategic partnership with a Letter of Intent, signed today by MU President Professor Eeva Leinonen and Dr Diarmuid O'Callaghan, President of DkIT.   Welcoming the signing of this letter of intent Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Patrick O'Donovan TD said: “The signing of today’s letter of intent by Maynooth University and Dundalk Institute of Technology is a positive move, signifying the intention of these two fine higher education institutions to build on their individual strengths and explore together how they can strategically develop to better serve the regions in which they are based. It is this kind of commitment to regional partnership and collaboration that will lead to sustainable and resilient development and better opportunities for all. Support from my Department, allocated by the HEA to DkIT through the Technological Sector Advancement Fund, has enabled today's signal of intent.”   MU President Prof Eeva Leinonen said: “I am delighted to advance this strategic engagement with Dundalk Institute of Technology. partnership builds on our longstanding relationship and is a milestone in our ongoing efforts to enhance higher education in the region. Meet Alina Thielen, one of our new PhD representatives 👋🏻 We asked Alina some questions about her motivation, responsibilities and life outside of IMPRS-ML: ⏺️ What are your responsibilities? As the MPIB external representative, I represent the interests of the PhD students at the institute. Together with the other reps, we regularly meet the IMPRS-ML Coordination Office, MPIB directorate and PhD network to improve the conditions for PhD students at our institute. We also organise social gatherings for PhDs and are always happy about input from the community.   ⏺️ Why have you decided to become a student rep? I really like the curriculum and the support for PhD students that IMPRS-ML provides and I think that the MPIB is a great place to do a PhD. Therefore, I would also like to work on constantly improving the program, so that every PhD student can have good time here.   ⏺️ Do you have any specific ideas about what you would like to accomplish as student rep? Some upcoming projects we are thinking about are the organisation of a graduation ceremony at the MPIB and having methods workshops directly at our institute.   ⏺️ What do you like to do when you are not in the lab or thinking about science and the IMPRS-ML? What’s the relationship between MDRC and academia? Overlapping interests—and a kindred spirit of evidence-based inquiry—have long nourished close ties. Since our founding, these connections have also shaped hiring, with MDRC staff often coming from master’s and doctoral programs or even professorships and MDRC research assistantships likewise serving as a valued training ground for future academics. Likewise, we have a long history of shaping each other’s work. MDRC helped transform the approach to studying social policy, making random assignment studies the “coin of the realm” in several disciplines, as our former president Gordon Berlin put it. Meanwhile, academic institutions have long worked with MDRC to lend their unique expertise to methodological innovations and to particular research projects—from partnerships with the University of Michigan to study the impact of coaching on early childhood educators to work with the Community College Research Center at Teachers College, Columbia University, to craft new interventions for helping community college students. Yet MDRC’s 50-year story also reveals important differences with academia. From the beginning, MDRC did not stop at carrying out a research study. We brought capabilities in program operations and technical assistance that enabled larger-scale projects and more hands-on work with government and nonprofit partners. And while many academics want to see their work applied, academia’s reward structure is often weighted against interdisciplinary work that helps build actionable evidence. Above all, MDRC has been a hub for researchers who care about real-world impact. Sometimes that’s meant welcoming new staff who want to build a career outside of academia. Other times, it’s meant partnering with scholars who are based at academic institutions. 📍This evening The AIM Group attended USP College for their Progression Hub event! It was an extreamly busy and successful event, where we exhibited alongside many other Universities and training providers! ✅It’s great that students can access a range of providers to help them explore their next steps into further/Higher education👣 🗣We delivered Parent and Student talks throughout the evening discussing Apprenticeship Awareness and How to find an Apprenticeship sessions. 📣In the talk we explored Apprenticeship pathways to help students and parents understand: 📌What is an apprenticeship, wage, and other key elements 📌What levels are available discussing Level 2 & level 3 as well as higher and degree 📌Potential job roles and industries they are offered in & which employers are offering apprenticeship vacancies 📌How and where to find apprenticeship vacancies 📌 We also focused on higher and degree apprenticeship awareness as many students and parents were keen to find out more about this route! ⚡️There was great interest in #apprenticehsips and we are excited about the buzz and growing interest in all pathways! It’s great that students have the opportunity to think about which route will suit their career goals, personalities & preferred learning style! Thank you to Issues in S&T for publishing Muller-Parker and Bourke's important research on making NSF's GRFP program more inclusive. As I say in my letter of response, there is little to no evidence that traditional ways of evaluating students for grad study or fellowship are the best ways, and we can learn from GRFP and other programs that are testing better ways. https://lnkd.in/eUGiKebi

🚨Calling North American Universities: the UR2PhD Institutional Partner application deadline has been extended. Applications received by March 15 will be given priority, but applications will be accepted through the start of the fall term 🚨 The UR2PhD program was launched with the goal of significantly increasing the number of women and gender-marginalized students, especially those who identify as Black, Native, and Latinx, pursuing a PhD in a CISE field. To this end, UR2PhD is helping institutions scale their research training capabilities, so that undergraduates have access to quality experiences and graduate students feel prepared to provide positive mentorship and guidance. If your institution is looking to scale undergraduate research efforts, while also reducing the time commitment required to train new researchers and elevating the level of support available to students, consider applying to be an institutional partner! ✏️NOTE: Students do not need to attend an institutional partner school to participate.
