🔬 [Microbiome & Liver disease] 🔬 #Microbiome & #Hepatology: Intestinal Dysbiosis Amplifies Acetaminophen-Induced Acute Liver Injury  Schneider et al. studied the link between intestinal dysbiosis, #bacterial #translocation and Acetaminophen-induced liver injury in mice model (including Nrlp6 -/- KO mice). 🗝Some key points: 📌Although the link between intestinal dysbiosis and chronic liver disease is well established, there is little evidence for a functional role of #gut-liver interaction during Acute #Liver Failure (ALF). 📌Long-term medication with proton pump inhibitor or Antibiotics was associated with an increased risk for ALF in the UK BioBank population-based cohort. 📌Acetaminophen (APAP) poisoning represents the leading cause of ALF in Western countries and remains a condition with poor outcomes and high mortality. 📌APAP intoxication in mice triggered marked changes in gut microbiota composition, followed by loss of intestinal barrier integrity and exaggerated bacterial translocation, leading to a significant increase of bacterial DNA in the liver. #Scientists hail #new #antibiotic that can kill #drugresistant #bacteria Zosurabalpin has defeated strains of pneumonia and sepsis in mice, raising hopes for human trials Linda Geddes Science correspondent Wed 3 Jan 2024 11.00 EST Notifications off Scientists have discovered an entirely new class of antibiotic that appears to kill one of three bacteria considered to pose the greatest threat to human health because of their extensive drug-resistance. Zosurabalpin defeated highly drug-resistant strains of Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (Crab) in mouse models of pneumonia and sepsis, and was being tested in human trials. Crab is classified as a priority 1 critical pathogen by the World Health Organization, alongside two other drug-resistant forms of bacteria – Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterobacteriaceae.

The video by Benoît Laventie, a senior scientist in Prof. Urs Jenal's research group, shows how the pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa invades human lung tissue. “We have grown human lung microtissues that realistically mimic the infection process inside a patient’s body,” explains Jenal. “These lung models enabled us to uncover the pathogen’s infection strategy. Well, somehow it’s nearly December(?!), so it’s probably time for another of my favourite commissioned articles from this year. This time, I’m sharing a Commentary led by a member of Future Microbiology’s Editorial Board, Dr. Joseph Blondeau. 🦠Zoonotic agents (those transmitted from animals to humans) have attracted significant attention with the transmission of multiple diseases from animals to humans in the last decade, including the recent transmission of swine flu. 🐕 This article looks at Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, a type of bacteria that typically causes infections in cats and dogs but has recently been reported in humans. ⚕️The authors highlight the importance of recognizing S. pseudintermedius as a cause of human infection to accurate diagnosis, treatment and the timely study of transmission pathways.
