Is Art only for rich people? The Govandi Arts Festival begs to differ. At the recent Global Culture District Network convening, I came across the amazing story of this festival in Mumbai. The setting is Govandi, a crowded marginalised neighbourhood created as housing for low income workers. It usually featured in headlines about crime. A partnership of several cultural organizations in India and the UK proposed an idea of a performing and visual arts festival to the community leaders. To put it on, they paired artists with Govandi residents through a mentorship program and artist residency. People who had never expressed themselves artistically in public learned the skills needed to do so. The Govandi students then created their art and rehearsed their performances in preparation for the festival. An area within the neighborhood, which was mostly used as a car park, was chosen as the site. There was last-minute drama, when the authorities didn’t issue the necessary permits. This was resolved by the community leaders themselves making the case for why the festival was beneficial for the neighbourhood. The Govandi Arts Festival was a success. It brought the community together to express themselves and their identity. Journalists covering it noted that they had never come to Govandi to cover a positive story. Some of the Govandi artists became known and traveled around India, sharing their experience and their art. The public space where the festival took place wasn’t reclaimed by the cars afterwards. This wasn’t a fancy expensive production. It didn’t require a multi-million dollar building. It didn’t require a massive collection. Yet it brought joy to the community, empowered the artists who participated, and allowed Govandi to have pride in its identity. It was also a great example of cross-border collaboration between arts organizations, artists, and the community. The arts are a platform for social change, community building, and self-expression. Their impact is so much larger when they are accessible to all. How can you introduce the arts into your community? #ArtsandCulture #Community Photo by Arghyadip Hatua

Culture and art are intertwined aspects of human expression and creativity. Culture encompasses the beliefs, customs, traditions, and values that shape a society, while art is a form of creative expression that often reflects and influences culture. Art can take various forms, including visual arts, music, literature, dance, and theatre. It serves as a means to convey ideas, emotions, and stories, often providing a window into the cultural and historical context in which it is created. Both culture and art play a significant role in shaping and reflecting the identity of societies and individuals. For our nation, #independence also came with the pain of the #partition. This #IndependenceDay, let us look at personal narratives; the stories of millions of people who experienced the devastating effects of an event that split our sub-continent. In our digital immersive experience "Un.Divided Identities: Lesser-known Stories of the Partition", we take you through a choice-based, graphic-novel-style experience, using representative characters with stories of #migration. To engage with the exhibition, you must choose a character, make decisions about where they go, how they travel, and ultimately, decide what happens to them: do they reach safely, or die along the way? Where do they end up living? Each of these decisions will have a consequence on the lives of the protagonists and their families. Experience what happened 77 years ago, around this time.
