Over the holidays, I stumbled upon a fascinating book, "LikeWar: The Weaponization of Social Media." It provides an insightful history of social media and how it has been used by various entities to manipulate perceptions, from changing opinions on events to even influencing national elections. Definitely worth the read. Unfortunately, decentralizing social media won't solve this problem. Moving from echo chambers to seeming anarchy is a slow process, and many existing platforms will likely integrate to provide a better user experience and abstract away the negative aspects. It's interesting to see Meta making the transition with their Threads platform, as it's reminiscent of the longevity of platforms like AOL and CompuServe. Meta Expands Threads' Beta for Fediverse Sharing to Over 100 Countries Meta has extended the beta for its Instagram-based social network, Threads, to enable users to share content with the fediverse, an interconnected network of servers utilizing the ActivityPub protocol. Initially launched in March with limited access in the U.S., Canada, and Japan, the beta is now open to Threads users aged 18 and above with public accounts in more than 100 countries. This expansion aims to familiarize users with the fediverse, elucidating its functionality as a network of interacting servers and the dynamics of content sharing. Meta anticipates that this move will lead to increased exploration of the fediverse, potentially attracting users who were previously apprehensive about platforms like Mastodon. In addition to sharing capabilities, Threads now permits authors of federated posts to like and view replies from the broader fediverse, albeit direct replies to these are not yet enabled. Throughout the beta phase, Threads posts will be visible on Mastodon, and interactions from the fediverse will be mirrored on Threads. However, only top-level posts and self-replies are federated, as other post types such as polls and those with reply controls are not yet supported. # Thank you Anastasia Petrovich for your submission!

You don't have to be an informed anti - Facebook/Meta/Zuckerberg hater (but that does make it more energizing) to become activated to fight Meta's data colonizing moves via Threads into the Fediverse via adopting the ActivityPub protocol. Long-ish read, but worth it. (20 minutes) I must say, I have generally been extremely skeptical with Facebook's (Meta's) intentions with Threads (their x.com competitor). Consider me surprised and cautiously optimistic that threads could one day become federated (decentralized!), meaning that servers owned by Mastodon users can work interoperably with the Threads user base (literally any Facebook user). From the article: "For those of you who haven’t been keeping up, the Fediverse is one approach to the question, “How can we have one (or more) social network(s) that no one company owns, for which anyone can make a client or a server, with all of them interoperating as seamlessly as possible so that they’re understandable to people who aren’t terminally online”." If Metas #threads roadmap evolves as their product team indicates, my cynicism around Meta's attempts at world dominance will be seriously in jeopardy. Removing the 'walled garden' approach for Threads means a more competitive and open social media ecosystem..one with enough clout to improve collective sensemaking. It would mean a massive win for free speech, privacy and data rights, and a reversal of a trend towards full control of speech via a tiny handful of multinational corporations. The big remaining ❓: What are Zuckerberg's incentives here? Meta is a business that is responsible to it's shareholders, so what do they gain by opening up and decentralizing their control? Meta can still moderate any speech coming from its platform: is this a way to get users (vs. advertisers) a way to pay a monthly fee for control of their content? This seems most likely. Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has entered the first phase of interoperability for 'Threads' functionality via ActivityPub. This forms part of Meta's bigger plan to bring its standalone 'Threads' app into the broader Facebook family. Thread is an exciting social media tool that allows users to create shared spaces for discussion, similar to Facebook Groups. It was initially launched as a direct camera-first app for Instagram but didn't gain much traction. Now it has been revamped with a new focus on group interactions within a business setting. The first phase of its interoperability via ActivityPub is highly significant. ActivityPub is a decentralized social networking protocol based on the ActivityStreams 2.0 data format. It provides a client-to-server API for creating, updating, and deleting content, as well as a federated server-to-server API for delivering notifications and content. ActivityPub's role in Threads will allow the app to interact with various other platforms and services within the digital space. With this initial rollout, Meta aims to gauge user response, address bugs, and improve the platform's compatibility with existing systems. In addition, the integration of Threads with Meta's suite of apps, including Messenger and Instagram, is part of a bigger plan to fully merge all Meta-owned platforms into a unified ecosystem. This will allow users to message each other across different apps - a significant step towards creating a seamless, interconnected digital network. In the coming months, we can anticipate further updates and improvements as Meta continues its work on the Threads tool integration. Meta is taking some radical steps for a big tech company: they're going to make their posts in Threads available on an open decentralised social media protocol that can facilitate "interoperable" social media. This is however more likely guided by their desire to break X than any commitment to 'open' social media. Not to mention that they're powered by Advertisements while "fediverse" (the interoperable social media) wants to stay Ad free. The proposition behind 'open' social media is interesting, after all almost all of it is a mix of text, images and videos generated by users. To what extent it is interoperable is quite hard to predict at this stage. But the proposition of breaking the monopolies in the sector itself is quite alluring.
