im happy to see emerging powerful small llms. As everyone of us predicted in the past, llms will become a great part of our daily basis, ranging from smart-watches assistant (the cause why im so exciting with this low parameters llms) or incorpored into vr/ar glasses. Looking into a near future, whereas llms could be part of computer games, npcs would not anymore npcs, could be controlled via smart agents, taking smarter decisions and not only repeating phrases as nowadays.

Most interesting aspect of this article is that we should not think of small models replacing larger models, but rather how we can use small and large models in concert as part of a broader solution to produce the right outputs for the right kinds of challenges. In my line of work I've seen many cases were certain Large Language Models may be overkill for a specific use-case, so this rings true.

💡🤖 Some users may only need small models, some will need big models and many are going to want to combine both in a variety of ways. Choosing the right language model depends on an organization’s specific needs, the complexity of the task and available resources. Small language models are well suited for organizations looking to build applications that can run locally on a device (as opposed to the cloud) and where a task doesn’t require extensive reasoning or when a quick response is needed.

The Small-Language-Model (#SLM) could be more and more helpful when focusing on the specific areas to make practical use. Instead of using massive resources, the SLMs could make smarter AI for various tasks with much less requirements on the computing power and hardware.

Next to intelligent automation, SLM’s are my other main area of interest in AI given their ability to help very specific functions or areas of disclipline in a way LLM’s can’t do as well, while being much more accessible to small businesses.
