I'm also anticipating a "unified platform" although that doesn't always the best products and services make it to mass consumption if history is to repeat itself. How will AAM/UAM handle disasters? My informal talks with industry stakeholders revealed a frightening thought. Half of the OEMs and service providers ducked their heads in the sand saying nothing bad would happen. The other half admitted they were thinking about disaster handling, but didn't have the resources to commit. This article highlights the importance of being ethical, and honest, prioritizing communication first with the victim families. Was a pleasure to visit Speakers’ House last night for a reception to mark Flight100, which took off from Heathrow last November using 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel, a world first. Hosted by Virgin Atlantic and Boeing, the event heard from both companies on the conclusions from the historic flight, which included: - A full lifecycle analysis demonstrated a saving of 95 tonnes of CO2, or 64% of the emissions produced from a standard flight from London - Additional benefits beyond carbon reductions with a 40% reduction in non-CO2 particulate emissions, suggesting SAF could have a material impact on improving local air quality at airports and reducing the formation of persistent contrails - An improved overall fuel burn efficiency with Flight100 SAF producing 1% more energy compared to the same mass of fossil fuel - Operational efficiencies including direct routing and reduced taxi time resulted in 2.2 tonnes of jet fuel saving, or 4% of overall fuel burn - Verification of contrail forecasting models which, through continued work led by RMI’s Contrail Impact Task Force, could lead to operational measures that reduce contrail formation and climate impact Hugely encouraging results which demonstrate the importance of scaling up SAF production, including here in the UK, so that the industry can meet mandated targets and hit our carbon reduction commitments. As was again said last night, if SAF is made, airlines will fly it.
