The UK has a new government 😲 What does this mean for NHS digital transformation? It's encouraging to see the new #Labour government committing to the #NHS with plans for 40,000 additional appointments per week and a focus on leveraging existing technology like the NHS app. Their intention to harness AI for #diagnostics highlights their recognition of the crucial role technology will play in the future of the NHS and social care. However, Labour's manifesto lacked specifics on implementation and funding. Now in power, they need to deliver on their promises. One immediate step is expanding the digitisation of services like social prescribing, which reduces GP workload and supports mental health patients. Tech-enabled care also offers a practical solution, allowing people to manage their conditions at home, allowing social care services to operate more efficiently. Instead of starting from scratch, the priority should be on expanding digital initiatives within the NHS and social care, sectors that have often been neglected.

Recently, the UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt pledged a whopping £3.4 billion in funding to support digital transformation in the NHS. The IT systems in the NHS are massively outdated and have caused huge issues for the health service, including a worrying breach in the software that stored confidential patient files. The new funding will help to update MRI scanners with AI, automate back-office functions, digitalise patient records and give staff more easy-to-use tools to conduct their duties efficiently. It is predicted that the new digital transformation funding will help by cutting wait times, freeing up beds and generally making the service run quicker and smoothly. It's great to see important organisations like the NHS receive government-backed support for their digital transformation goals. This is a great example of how technology can be used for good! #digitaltransformation #NHS #healthcare #healthservice #health #UK #ukgovernment #AI

What are the 5 things the next UK government should prioritise to turn around health & social care? I was delighted to be asked to share my thoughts in The Times today. To future-proof the NHS, we need tech innovators working hand-in-glove with health & social care chiefs to build a new, preventative model of care for our ageing population - one where health risks are proactively predicted, prevented and managed, reducing hospitalisations. This is the time to embrace AI and not to fear it. With the #GeneralElection approaching in just a few short weeks - here are the 5 areas the next UK government must prioritise to turn around health and social care. 🏥 Taking care out of hospitals and into patients' homes and communities: this is more convenient, affordable and sustainable. 📱 Digitalising, like almost every sector has already. 📉 Focusing on prevention. ↔ Joining up health and social care, rather than sending patients from pillar to post between services. Tech will play a critical role here. 💡Embracing AI's potential to address workforce gaps, improve diagnostics, prognostics and treatment options - all within the important envelope of data privacy, patient safety and consent. #AI #innovation #prevention #healthandsocialcare #NHS #LondonTechWeek #GeneralElection https://lnkd.in/eNGmQRRE

Imperial College Professor of Cardiology; Co-Founder Imperial Connected Care, OneWelbeck Heart Health, Arpiem Ltd - #go-to-care is our go-to-market framework delivering UK's biggest AI deployment in NHS primary care.
Sure, but with no shortage of #AIhealthtech or desire, why is there desparately little emerging in care?🤔. That all sounds great, but who's the we in "We must..." and what does "embrace" mean? Answer?...the #gotocare framework - we've got >1000 GPs in London using an AI diagnostic triggering treatment in routine direct NHS care. Next stop?...national deployment Next step?...next batch of direct care pathway-first tech deployments. You've heard of GoToMarket - this is #GoToCare. and not just an endless string of failed pilots or yet another proof of effectiveness. Clinically-led nationwide implementation direct to care using clinical, regulatory and technical know-how and relationships. Sounds simple?...it's really not. But it is essential. Got other examples of #gotocare to share?....let's all help solve truly meaningful clinical implementation.

Digital change offers an unprecedented opportunity to address the substantial burden of NCDs. However, the application of #digitaltechnologies needs to be thoughtfully aligned with public health functions, goals, and broader societal implications. #Digitalplatforms can serve as tools for better public #healthmonitoring, decision-making, as well as #publicengagement, and education. Digital solutions, such as #telehealth platforms and health monitoring #applications, may offer more scalable approaches by improving efficiency, effectiveness, and user experience. Digital health and #AI in particular have great potential to make public health and health care of NCDs more efficient, effective, user-friendly, and equitable: the quadruple aim. However, the success of #digital #publichealth and AI-supported public health measures will require clear criteria, monitoring, and benchmarks on how to achieve benefits for the majority while not putting minorities and vulnerable groups at a disadvantage. As such, AI explainability and unlearning of discriminatory or biased decision-making will be even more crucial for population-level decisions (which are common in public health, eg, regarding resource allocation) than in individual-level health care. Therefore, the close involvement of stakeholders, including patients, citizens, and vulnerable and minority populations, will be crucial in the development, roll out, and monitoring of AI-powered digital public health. Mostly a 50,000 foot view with little in the way of detail and lots of 'buzz phrases' -- leveraging AI (we know), growing prevalence of health inequities (growing or just finally being recognized?), virtual care (finally not viewed as a threat but a cost-effective tool for expanded access), staffing shortages (everywhere), etc. What I find interesting is what's NOT here (past and future factors that are claimed to slow VBC adoption) -- the many challenges inherent in reimagining workflows and revenue streams, who's the arbiter of 'quality' and agreeing on metrics, , the issue of specialty VBC adoption, industry morale and post-C19 consumer mistrust, how the influx of a huge uninsured/federally subsidized demographic will affect profits/cost-shifting practices, driving down fraud/waste/abuse...I'm sure you can come up with others. As here many before me have said - healthcare is not easy, and it's personal. No one (not even Europe or Canada) does it perfectly. The take-away -- keep plugging.

1wIt’s a wait and see game, promises are always made but rarely fully met for healthcare. Fingers crossed because the NHS does need the government to invest!!
