Walmart's Next Big Move: Rolling Out Electronic Shelf Labels Nationwide 🛒💡 As the retail industry evolves, price management is undergoing a transformation. Walmart’s recent announcement to implement electronic shelf labels (ESLs) across 2,300 stores by 2026 is a testament to this change. These ESLs can update prices every ten seconds, allowing for dynamic pricing strategies. 📈 Grocery industry analyst Phil Lempert highlights the flexibility ESLs offer, like raising the price of ice cream on hot days or discounting items nearing expiration. This dynamic approach mirrors surge pricing models seen in apps like Uber and fast-food chains like Wendy’s. 📱🍔 However, the benefits of ESLs extend beyond dynamic pricing. Daniela Boscan, who participated in Walmart’s Texas pilot, notes the productivity gains and reduced walking time for employees, facilitating quicker shelf restocking. ⏱️🚶♂️ Major retailers like Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh already use ESLs, common in Europe, for similar advantages. These tags also enhance the shopping experience by providing detailed product information via barcodes, improving transparency for health-conscious customers. 🌍📊 Santiago Gallino from the Wharton School underscores the labor cost savings for both large and small retailers. ESLs ensure price consistency between online and in-store purchases, minimizing customer confusion and enhancing satisfaction. 🤝🛍️ At Aptimyz Retail, we recognize the potential of electronic shelf labels to revolutionize retail pricing and operations for businesses of all sizes. “We believe that embracing cutting-edge technologies like electronic shelf labels is essential for staying competitive and delivering exceptional customer experiences. Our goal is to empower retailers to optimize their operations and meet the ever-changing needs of consumers,” says David Soden, CEO of Aptimyz Retail. By staying ahead of such technological advancements, we continue to empower retailers to enhance efficiency and customer experience. Moving from paper to digital is a game changer for warehouses. Retailers are also adopting ESL technology. Walmart stores typically stock 120K+ items & change 1000s of prices weekly. The shift from paper tags to digital shelf labels will reduce price updates from 2 days to 2 minutes. Tag lights will notify workers when shelves need restocking. #WMS #WES #DigitalWarehouse #Smartwarehouse https://smpl.is/98e7s

We're excited to see Grocery Doppio featured in TIME! The article highlights the shift towards digital price labels in grocery stores and the benefits of this technology for retailers and consumers. Our report on Workforce challenges found that 68% of grocers have found it “difficult” or “very difficult” to staff up, which is one of the reasons why stores are turning to electronic labels to increase efficiency. Thank you, Simmone Shah, for including our insights in your article. It's great to see the discussion about how digital price labels can help save money, reduce labor challenges, and lower food waste. Agility in supply chain economics is important, and Walmart is raising the bar. Walmart may soon bring electronic price tags to your local store, where prices on the shelf could be changed equally as fast as the price changes at gasoline pumps. This is a HUGE development! As much food (and other products, too) that Walmart sells, being able to change price on demand for ANY item in the store could happen in a few seconds - even from a central command center in Arkansas. For world or local events that change price on items like fresh fruits and vegetables, coffee, eggs, etc., the ability to increase price following a weather event or an outbreak of something like the bird flu on egg-laying farms could create an opportunity to avoid pricing power erosion. Or perhaps if a media influencer prompts demand for the latest fashion or gadget, the price can change upward quickly with exploding demand. But not only increases in price, but also decreasing price. Inventory glut on something that isn't selling? Run a 'hot buy' advertisement through digital advertising and change the price according to demand by market to maximize liquidation of products in each respective markets. Soon that costly inventory sitting on shelves can be sold at a strategic price point in each market - perhaps days ahead of the normal manual price change cycle. For a company like Walmart selling over a billion dollars per day in its US stores, strategic price changes to match demand-supply or buyer characteristics and demographics might achieve substantially more profit. With the potential AI brings to forecasting and demand evaluations, this could be a huge profit boost. One additional point: the article mentions ability to perform a "pick to light" function. Distribution / fulfillment has been using this in industrial settings for many years, and now this will help retail labor fill orders more efficiently within store operations. Visual aids are very helpful for productivity but also order accuracy. Congratulations Walmart on this leap in innovation! While Walmart isn't the first to market with this technology to store shelves, due to its size and its digital initiatives it will bring tremendous capability to the retailer. I just hope that prices don't change UPWARD from the point I put an item in my cart to the point where I checkout. I already seem to mistime the price changes at the pump (and not favorably)! #walmart #retail #supplychain #demandplanning #fulfillment #innovation #procurement #logistics

Should digital shelf labels stir worries over dynamic pricing? Walmart announced that it is replacing price stickers in its aisles with electronic shelf labels at 2,300 U.S. stores by 2026. Do digital shelf labels pack benefits for both store associates and in-store shoppers? Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gUCDjZKS John Hennessy "The dynamic pricing concern is very ill placed. While some research has indicated shopper concern, research also shows that categories with ESLs have improved sales. Further, dynamic pricing should not be assumed to be an instant negative. The ability to centrally control pricing gives retailers the chance to price match in-store as they do online today. It simplifies markdowns. And overall it ensures pricing consistency and accuracy." Raj B. Shroff "I don’t think consumers should be concerned. We are all used to price changes and tend to be able to game the system (unless a monopoly like Ticketmaster) and figure out the best time to buy, wait for sales, etc." John Lietsch "The benefits to retailers seem obvious in terms of effort-hours and error rates. Unfortunately, the benefits to consumers are a matter of trust. Do consumers trust retailers with the cost savings of such initiatives?"

Are we about to see a tipping point in Electronic Shelf Edge Label adoption? LIDL following ALDI in rolling these out. Southern Co-op also using them now in all their stores. The odd one out is ASDA that ended their trial with them last year. This is not exactly new tech - it's been around for 30 years and there are now so many advantages in using them beyond simply changing prices it's always seemed very strange to me that they have not been more widely adopted. I suspect the cost and complexity of changing the legacy back end systems of the big grocers to put these in has been the stumbling block and not just the cost of the label screens (from approx £4 each) - but it is not hard to see how retail media and digital twinning technology could be combined with this to great effect. Some advantages: 1. Instant price changes - no manpower required to change 2. Variable product pricing and promotional activity at store level 3. Instant promotion implementation 4. Light system to aid in-store picking of online orders 5. QR code display for smartphone scanning of nutritional information It's only going to be a matter of time before we see others following this path - I'm sure the likes of Blue Yonder and Relex have already got integrations with their s & op systems and Symphony AI are not going to be ignoring it either. #retailmedia #retailmarketing #instoremarketing https://lnkd.in/e2CiYpWJ
