Across all industries, digitalization and automation are on the rise under the Industry 4.0 vision, and the forest industry is no exception. The forest industry depends on distributed flows of raw materials to the industry through various phases, wherein the typical workflow of timber loading and offloading is finding traction in using automation and 5G wireless networking technologies to enhance efficiency and reduce cost. Our recent article presents one such ongoing effort in Sweden, Remote-Timber —demonstrating a 5G-connected teleoperation use-case within a workflow of timber terminal—and disseminates its business attractiveness as well as first measurement results on network performance. Also, it outlines the future needs of the 5G network design/optimization from teleoperation perspective. There is a lot of work to be done before 5G deliver as the marketing claims! The paper is published in IEEE Industrial Electronics Magazine and written by Aamir Mahmood, Sarder Fakhrul Abedin, Mattias O'Nils, Mats Bergman (Telia), and Mikael Gidlund. #SmartSensing 🌍As people around the world unite in the fight against climate change, Forestry Training Institute (FTI) Olmotonyi of Bomi County, Liberia🌳, One Planet Education Network, LLC (OPEN), and the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of Maryland🎓have joined forces. Together, they are making significant strides in monitoring climate and greenhouse gas data in rainforests, marking a major advancement in climate research using our SenseCAP devices. 🔍 By leveraging the low-power, long-range, and cost-effective features of LoRaWAN technology and SenseCAP sensors, this project is overcoming the challenges of limited infrastructure and remote locations. Helium’s decentralized IoT network enables long-range data transmission, while Ubidots’ IoT application development platform allows for rapid assembly and launch of IoT applications. Furthermore, the project ensures the collected data is accessible and transparent, supporting its use by various stakeholders including researchers, policy makers, and carbon finance organizations.
