On average, each consumer buys 60% more clothing than 20 years ago and 92m tonnes of textile waste are created annually. Every second, the equivalent of a lorry load of clothes ends up on a landfill site somewhere around the world. According to the UN, the fashion industry is one of the world’s greatest polluters, responsible for about 20% of the planet’s wastewater and about 10% of greenhouse gas emissions. How are these companies still so profitable while having so much wasted inventory ? Is this an accounting scandal waiting to happen ? #circularity #sustainability #zerowaste

Consumers want businesses to use less polluting production methods, collaborate with charity shops for garment reuse, and eliminate the wasteful practice of destroying unsold goods. The report highlights public support for government intervention, including bans on destroying unsold items and extended producer responsibility for the textile industry. The fashion industry's take, make, waste model can be replaced by the biggest business opportunity of the century, utilising innovative materials and biomass waste. Growth is possible without increasing carbon emissions and established businesses need to commit more to rental, resale and repair. Like Liz, we would like the industry as a whole to come clean on the number of garments produced every year. "This is the one data point that we feel is most essential for our community — and for the industry as a whole — to not only address the current crisis but also to develop data-driven policies and a truly effective strategy for transitioning from linear to circular production" Amen Liz! Researchers believe we are producing somewhere between 100 and 150 billion items of clothing a YEAR but there is no real tracking of this endless production run. 👇 We need to produce less items made from virgin materials 💫 We need to circulate what is already in our wardrobes  🤝 We need to get better at sharing data across the fashion industry If we continue on this current path, the fashion industry could end up using more than 20% of the world’s carbon budget associated with a 2°C pathway, according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. 3 steps to discovering a brand’s circularity. You’ve taken a deep dive into your wardrobe and decided a few new pieces are needed. How do you navigate through all the greenwashing and come to the right decision. After all, many brands call themselves sustainable; but are they? Step 1 First, become a label turner. Check to see what the clothes are made from. Is it a natural, renewable, and biodegradable fiber such as Merino wool or cotton? Or is it made from fossil fuel, crude oil, plastic - such as nylon, acrylic and polyester, or even recycled polyester. These synthetic fibers shed thousands of microplastics into the air and ocean, unlike wool which does not contribute to microplastic pollution. Step 2 How was the garment made? Does the brand tell the story of its workers, so you know they are being paid a fair, living wage? Is the garment traceable - from the first thread created, through the supply chain until it lands on the store’s rack? Does the brand align with the UN SDGs and report their impacts on people, planet, and profit? Step 3 And most importantly, is the piece a timeless classic that can be worn, reworn, repaired or recycled? If the answer is yes then you know that, in the future, less will be made, less will be bought, and less will be wasted. Circular fashion requires collaboration from producers, manufacturers, designers, and you. Climate crisis is a huge threat to humanity. What’s less known about it is that the fashion industry is one of the biggest contributors, with fast fashion being the main culprit. The production of fast fashion garments requires large quantities of water, energy and chemicals and promotes the rapid consumption and of disposal of inexpensive clothing items, leading to excessive waste.
