Principle 1 of the green chemistry principles is "Prevention". It's a great principle that shouldn't just apply to chemistry. More than ever, scientists are working to prevent lab waste. Here are two small things we do: 1/ A kanban system for keeping on top of inventory. - It's a simple system that stops the excess ordering of reagents, which then go to waste. 2/ Recycling and reusing boxes. - Stop chucking polystyrene boxes into your building's industrial bins. Contact the vendor and get them collected so they are reused. We need to do more to prevent lab waste.
