It is always a pleasure to have a conversation with Becker's Healthcare’s—this organization brings imperative issues from across all aspects of healthcare. Looking forward to being at their meeting in Chicago next week! I am reflecting on the recent U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) report “A Lack of Behavioral Health Providers in Medicare and Medicaid Impedes Enrollees’Access to Care” (https://lnkd.in/giVAqC2c). The findings, simply said, are grim. Outside of my Magellan Health work, I support a behavioral health practice sitting inside of a FQHC. The need for services never stops, the quality of medication management we see for individuals coming into the clinic is often incomprehensible, and the social determinants of health often weigh more heavily on those seeking care than the actual symptoms of mental illness or substance abuse. The providers, a valiant team of nurse practitioners, LCSWs, medical assistants and other support staff bring their all every day. The risk for burnout is real. Reports like this one capture the numbers, but not the stories of those in need and of those who are already front line delivering care. We need to deploy smarter solutions like collaborative care, symptom- and situation-based triage, team-based approaches, a mix of therapeutic modalities, integrated app-supported care, and prevention. Let’s have the conversation about why the pool of practitioners is low and what we as an industry and a country can do to bolster needed services. We can do this!!
Dr. Caroline Carney, president of behavioral health and chief medical officer at Magellan Health, discusses with Becker’s Healthcare Podcast her thoughts on major healthcare issues emerging this year and what traits she believes are needed for effective healthcare leadership. Listen here:
