Last week, Kering announced the launch of the Kering Generation Award in Japan, joining forces with global innovation platform, CIC Tokyo. Inspired by Kering’s vision of Crafting Tomorrow’s Luxury, the award program, which aims to fast-track sustainable innovation within the luxury sector, will identify promising change-making start-ups and technologies in Japan that have the potential to challenge the current value chain, bringing a positive environmental and social impact. I have successfully completed the Inside LVMH course, marking a significant milestone in my career journey within the luxury industry. This program offered an in-depth exploration of LVMH & Luxury Experience, covering essential areas such as the LVMH career ladder, ESG goals and sustainability actions, branding and creation, and retail experience. Each course came with its own set of tests and projects, summing to a final exam which I passed with a perfect score of 100%! More importantly, it has provided me with clarity and direction for my future career. Fashion has always fascinated me, and despite it being the second most polluting industry in the world, I'm driven to contribute towards making a positive change. Understanding the importance of adapting to new regulations and changing perceptions, I'm more determined than ever to tackle these challenges head-on. A long-term talent ecosystem. The enhancement of a product and its perception, at times, does not solely derive from the product itself. I have always believed in the "culture" that surrounds a product (or service), particularly through content initiatives that create value. While we have observed similar initiatives, the distinct quality standard with which certain things are executed always makes a difference. Today, I learned that LVMH has announced its plans to inaugurate a Center for Craftsmanship in the heart of Paris by 2025. The conglomerate is consistently broadening its horizons, exploring innovative ways to integrate high fashion with various aspects of the cultural zeitgeist. This endeavor seeks to strengthen its portfolio of brands while simultaneously identifying and nurturing emerging talent. The center is set to function as a comprehensive hub, serving as the physical home for LVMH's vocational training program, which has already imparted skills to over 2,700 individuals across seven countries. Fifty years ago fashion and luxury goods were all about family businesses and entrepreneurial designers. Today most of the best-known brands belong to a diversified group like LVMH, Richemont, or Kering. The success of such groups contradicts the management notion that a focus on one core leads to superior returns—and that diversification adds little value. An analysis of the performance of 350 fashion houses suggests that group affiliation does add value, say INSEAD’s Andrew Shipilov and Frédéric Godart. They found that the fashion collections of group brands were more successful, and judged more creative by industry buyers, than those of independent brands over a 10-year period. How do luxury groups get this edge? Through the way they groom their designers and managers. The groups exploit the variety of their businesses by setting up internal talent markets that offer rich learning opportunities. Rising stars are thus less tempted to leave the organization, and cross-group job moves help spread knowledge and best practices. Group watchmaking companies, for instance, have been able to boost their sales by hiring experts in marketing and CRM from their groups’ fashion and cosmetics firms. Worldwide operations give groups another advantage, because spending time overseas is critical to executive development. This is especially true in the luxury field, where international experience exposes designers to creative influences and executives to new but fast-growing customer segments. However, it isn’t just in their approach to internal talent that groups excel. They prime the entry-level pipeline by sponsoring educational programs and offering apprenticeships to promising students, as well as recruit external functional know-how more effectively than the independent brands do. "It has to be of our time and timeless at the same time" - Serge Carreira, on the paradox of luxury.✨ Probably one of the best quotes that I have ever come across regarding luxury till date.  Serge is a lecturer in the Program of the Master "New Luxury and Art de Vivre" at Sciences Po Paris, and his lectures during the Inside LVMH program, were probably one of my favourites regarding what makes a luxury brand relevant over time. So 8 weeks, 4 modules and multiple levels of assesments later, I finally got my Inside LVMH Certificate this July 2023. 😇✨ I literally felt like I was back to my fashion school days while preparing for any of my research projects or assessments at Istituto Marangoni! The Inside LVMH program, includes such useful and insightful modules that truly give you an "inside" take on what it's like working in the luxury industry, and specifically how LVMH built it's beautifully complex yet exceptionally well planned empire. Other than the two compulsory modules of: LVMH & The Luxury Industry Luxury & Sustainability I decided to opt for: Creation & Branding  Operations & Supply Chain And I'm so glad I did! Both the optional modules and the various case studies that they give you a chance to deep dive into, were a treat to study and learn from. Never did I ever think I'd have the chance to study the supply chain and performance factors at Sephora or get access to behind the scenes footage of the manufacturing process at Parfums Christian Dior. Montblanc Singapore customers never bought from another brand but they had almost 0 new customers. This is how they skyrocketed sales by 330% Many businesses dream of a loyal customer base. But what if you've reached a point where everyone in your target market already owns your product? This was the situation for Montblanc in 2013. Their pens were a hit with financiers, but the pool of potential ideal customers was finite. The question loomed: where would new growth come from? The answer, it turned out, was closer than they thought. Women are underrepresented in leadership positions. Even fewer of them see Montblanc pens as their go-to writing instrument. This was a significant, untapped market. But they did not launch a: - glittery pen - pink pen - new name They simply changed the brand messaging to include working women in the boardrooms. Through this strategic shift in their messaging, they started: - speaking directly to women - acknowledging their growing presence in the boardroom  - and positioning Montblanc pens as the perfect tool for them The outcome was phenomenal! Sales to women skyrocketed by a staggering 330% This is what we can take away from Montblanc’s case: 1️⃣ By simply opening the door and inviting a new audience to the table, Montblanc unlocked a massive opportunity. 2️⃣ This study isn't about changing the product itself. It's about recognizing blind spots and embracing a wider vision. 3️⃣ Sometimes, the key to growth lies not in altering what you offer, but in who you offer it to.
