Inclusive Design: Making Workplaces Accessible; Solve for One, Solve for All: The Benefits of Accessibility for Everyone; Beyond "Accommodating": Innovation Through Inclusion In this three-part series, Cam Raw and Alex Harrison are back, talking about one of their pet passions: inclusive design, accessibility and innovation. This dynamic duo hosted one of the most popular sessions at last year's The Veterinary Kaleidoscope Summit, and they are back by popular request. What is inclusive design? It is an approach to making the client and staff experience as usable and friendly for everyone, regardless of age, ability or life circumstances. It goes beyond accessibility, which is frequently mandated as a legal minimum. Accessibility is often thought of in physical terms, but it also extends into the digital realm. And many of us don't do it well. Solve For One: Solve For All is a remarkably simple concept - that solving problems for a few often benefits the many. Cam and Alex introduced us to this concept last year - and boy, have they got many examples for us this year. They've got some new surprises that even die hard TVK fans won't have seen before, and they can't wait to share them. Cam and Alex will team up with keynote speaker, Dinesh Palipana, in one of the sessions. It'll be an afternoon to make you think. The Veterinary Kaleidoscope Summit July 18-19 2024 The Pride Centre, Naarm (Melbourne), Victoria Get your tickets here: https://lnkd.in/gbgD2iSz #veterinary #conference #lgbtq #neurodivergent #disability #leadership #tvksummit#

PrideVMC Spotlight: Meet Devon Otero, DVM, MPH (he, him, his)! 🐊Your role in #vetmed? I am currently an Associate Veterinarian at VCA Animal Hospitals Cypress Creek Animal Hospital, in bright and sunny Florida. I was a Class of 2022 graduate from UF (Go Gators), and have been with VCA ever since. 👌🏾Why is proactively sharing pronouns important? There are two points of importance behind proactively sharing (and then, utilizing) personal pronouns – normalization and respect. To the first point, increased exposure to pronoun descriptions helps people build a sense of normalcy around the practice. It is important that the sharing of pronouns doesn’t put pressure on individuals to “out” themselves, and that it isn’t seen as “just a queer thing to do.” Everyone has identifiers that they feel more comfortable using, and a broader sharing of pronouns underscores the idea that everyone deserves to have that simple identifier respected. That naturally queues the second point – acknowledging pronouns is one of the easiest ways to promote a culture of respect! Cisgender or not, it is so easy to assume (wrongly) a person’s pronouns. The times I have received an email titled, “Ms. Otero” are too numerous to count. Proactively sharing pronouns takes the guesswork away, helps provide a safety net for non-cisgendered folks, and ensures that we are all able to add at least one intentional layer of respect to our day-to-day communications. 🎶Your walk-in song? New York Soul Pt. ii by Jon Bellion. Perfect balance of hype and vibe, and makes me feel closer to my New Yorker heritage. 🏳️⚧️In what way have you been impacted by the current unprecedented and horrific anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and rhetoric? Contrary to my prior statement, living in Florida doesn’t always feel bright and sunny. Just in the past year, there have been too many mornings wherein many of us have woken up to immediately feel the sting of learning we have fewer rights than we did the day before. In Florida specifically, many of my close mentors in higher education have lost their jobs or job protections due to efforts to ban diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in schools. There are no statewide housing protections for LGBTQ+ individuals, meaning my partner and I have a constant anxiety of being evicted for our identities. There are no protections for LGBTQ+ family planning or adoption services, there are explicit bans on transgender individuals using bathrooms or playing sports consistent with their gender identity, the discussion of LGBTQ+ people or topics is banned in schools, and there are multiple bans and restrictions on queer healthcare. All that to say – there are many times that I feel viscerally disappointed, frightened, and limited by those oppositional and ignorant forces. 💗Fave #quote? “You have to act as if it were radically possible to change the world, and you have to do it all the time.” – Angela Davis 🏳️⚧️ 🐾🏳️🌈 #vetmedpride

Here to support pets & the amazing humans that care for them 🫶🏼° Veterinary Talent Acquisition Partner @ Encore Vet Group 🐾 ° Mom to Bestest Boi Lou🦴°
I've never been more proud to live in Maine ♡. Governor Mills loudly communicated Maine's position and support of Transgender humans and their rights by signing this bill, and I'm incredibly grateful she did. Equally, I've never been more disappointed, disgusted, or disheartened by our human collective, and the hatred that is visceral and blatant towards the LGBTQ+ community, and specifically those that identify as Transgender. There is nothing that gives any human a right to attempt to strip another human of their identity, or right to exist as a unique individual, and no one deserves to feel as though they're being erased 💔. It's for reasons such as this that I'm grateful organizations such as blendvet™ and Pride Veterinary Medical Community exist 🫶🏼. Education, support, and advocacy are needed now more than ever, inside and outside of the veterinary community 🏳️🌈🌈♥️🐾. To all humans: Please do your best to be cognizant and inclusive, spread kindness wherever you can, educate yourself and those around you, and stand up ♡. While incredibly difficult information to absorb and process, Erin's article is insightful and informative. This Pride Month, let's celebrate and show our support for LGBTQIA+ folks in the veterinary world across Australia and New Zealand. Here's how we can all pitch in: ⭐Respecting: Everyone has the right to self-identify. Let’s honor that, whether they’re our colleagues, clients, or friends. ⭐Advocating: Stand up for LGBTQIA+ rights and visibility in our industry. ⭐Asking: Don't be afraid to ask questions and truly listen to the answers. ⭐Educating: Learn and respect people's gender pronouns and identities. ⭐Speaking Out: Speak up against discrimination and promote equality. These narratives proved to be the most persuasive 🎯, based on our latest research results... Let's have a deep dive! 🐮 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 🐮 The Animal Abilities narrative focuses on the rich internal experiences of fellow animals. It shows that, similar to humans, they have unique abilities, personalities and feelings. 🏳️🌈 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 🏳️🌈 The Social Progress narrative communicates humanity's trajectory towards greater empathy and inclusivity. From the abolishment of slavery to the universal suffrage movement to LGBT+ rights, history is punctuated by moments when we've chosen the path of greater fairness and justice. ⚖️ 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 ⚖️ The Morality narrative reinforces our ethical obligation to treat other animals with respect, kindness and compassion. At its core is the belief that causing unnecessary harm to another is fundamentally wrong. Drawing from principles like the Golden Rule – treating others as we would wish to be treated – this narrative encourages us to extend this basic ethic to all. ↪ Check out our 𝙈𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙂𝙪𝙞𝙙𝙚 to learn how to use these narratives in your campaigns! https://lnkd.in/ewpK7fWt #animalrights #animalfreedommovement #narratives
