In Tech and startups, it is normal to change jobs every 2-3 years. Within a company, it is common to decide to change roles or teams annually. Re-orgs (a company deciding to shuffle people around) are even more frequent. If there were statistics for changes of desks and seats, I think they would blow our minds. I have experienced all of that, and I continue to see my clients and students go through it as well. While frequent changes can sometimes solve a short-term problem and accelerate your career, I have also learned that patience can pay off. Things around you move so quickly that opportunities constantly arise, teams change, and projects evolve. Give it some time. It is better to plan for the next five years than to constantly make changes chasing the perfect job. The perfect job... well, you already know. #data #tech

Random career thought of the day... I can see why people eventually wash out of the tech industry. There are big salaries, but there is also big instability, and that instability comes in multiple forms, from job loss to rapidly shifting technologies. One has to be able to stay motivated and has to be intelligent enough to rapidly pick up new knowledge and skillsets or else risk falling into a legacy developer category. This is a monumental feat to maintain for the long-haul. So what exactly can you do when you're tired of running on the learning treadmill? This is why I feel it is important to learn some skills outside of tech, whether it be management or sales. Just as many of us have pivoted into tech, we shouldn't be opposed to pivoting back out of tech when the situation calls for it... and that doesn't mean you completely abandon your tech skills. It just means you use it in a different context and you remain flexible and open enough to 'do something else' when the tech market is cratering.

𝐇𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬: 𝐏𝐡𝐃𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐩 Hiring talent that is agile and adaptable as you grow is critical for scaling a business. If you haven’t considered hiring PhDs, you should. It’s easy to assume PhDs are ‘overqualified” or that they have lofty salary expectations. This is a big mistake. PhD applicants are a hugely valuable (and wildly untapped) talent pool. 🎯 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐖𝐡𝐲: 1️⃣ 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲’𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐬 – Their academic careers equipped them with a t-shaped skill set, making them versatile and able to play multiple positions. 2️⃣ 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐞𝐭 – They’re lifelong learners. They’re not just open to new ideas; they seek them out, allowing them to grow as your business grows. 💡 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐏𝐢𝐞𝐜𝐞 Academia tends to pay less than the business sector. Offer a fair market rate, and you’ll not only attract PhD talent but retain them. 𝐓𝐋𝐃𝐑; PhDs offer a rich skill set and a growth mindset that are invaluable for scaling companies. Don't overlook this largely untapped reservoir of talent; instead, tap into it. #phd #management #hiring
