Black History Month originated in the United States in 1926, thanks to historian Carter G. Woodson. It started as "Negro History Week" in February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The aim was to highlight the often-overlooked contributions of African Americans to the nation's history. Canada and the United Kingdom also dedicate one month to celebrating Black History. Acknowledging Black History is crucial as it recognizes the resilience, achievements, and significant impact of African Americans despite historical adversities. It promotes a more inclusive and accurate understanding of our shared history. https://buff.ly/47Vz8aw

As we recognize Black History Month, we celebrate the contributions of African Americans who shaped York County and beyond, in all periods of U.S. history — including the history being made even today. What will you do, this month and year-round, to recognize Black history?

Black history is expansive. Yet, so much of it isn’t taught in schools. To really honor Black history, we must be committed to learning year-round about the history, the heroes and the honest truth. 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: Black culture carries the weight of a complex and often painful history, including the struggles against slavery, colonisation, and systemic racism. It serves as a testament to the resilience, strength, and resistance of Black communities, honouring the achievements and contributions of those who came before. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡? Together, let's honor the history that is often overlooked and pay tribute to those who have made a lasting impact on the world with their influence. Black History Month is not only a time for reflection, but also an opportunity to celebrate diversity and advocate for a more inclusive future.

As we approach Black History Month it’s important to note this month is a time for reflection and celebration, but it’s not enough to simply acknowledge the past. We must also focus on the needs of the present and future. It’s time to move beyond symbolic gestures and work towards real change. Let’s ensure that policies and practices are in place to uplift and support Black individuals throughout the year. Together, we can create a system that truly values and empowers every member of our community. #blackhistory #justice #policy #systemschange
