Last year, I was working as a Product Management consultant in a large financial organisation. I was having a chat with the Product Owner about how is the Product going. The response was really positive. He gave some good insight into the product. Shared some nice metrics such as ✅ Number of features delivered ✅ Improved velocity in the past six months ✅ Good looking burndown and burnup charts My reaction was: Love it mate, but where is the value? This question triggered a really nice discussion (or disagreement). According to the individual delivering more and faster is what Agile is all about. Even he printed the Agile Manifesto and pointed towards one of the 4 values: Working Software (Product) over Comprehensive Documentation. However, for me, it doesn't really matter if we can't deliver value to users/customers. Don't take me wrong, I am not saying that don't deliver the working product or increment. It is essential to create increments to understand what is valuable for our users or customers But we can't stop at just creating the Increment. We need to go beyond that and learn whether the Increment we have created has delivered the value that we initially thought of. 💡 Instead of merely counting the PBIs delivered also place emphasis on obtaining genuine feedback/analytics from users and customers. This will ensure we're truly delivering value as intended. #scrum #visiontovalue #product

Eager to make an immediate impact in new team as Product Owner ! The role of a Product Owner is strategic, not just about delivery. Making an instant impact without understanding the needs of your product and team can have unintended consequences. Here are some recommendations to understand your team’s product maturity and construct a plan accordingly: **Ensure there is only one owner for the Product Backlog. Remember, there should be one (and only one) Product Owner for the Product Backlog. **Check if the Product Backlog (PB) is prioritized based on the Product Vision. **Ensure newly discovered requirements are being captured in the backlog, which should be emergent. **Verify that the backlog serves as an information radiator, accessible and visible to all stakeholders. **Confirm that requirements (especially those for upcoming sprints) are written as independent, negotiable, valuable, estimable, small, and testable user stories. **Evaluate if the size of the Product Backlog is manageable. Product owner accountability: What it means and how to be more accountable Product owners play a critical role in ensuring the success of a product. They are responsible for maximizing the value of the product for customers and stakeholders, and they need to be accountable for their decisions and actions. Accountability is the obligation to answer for one's actions and to take responsibility for the consequences. As a product owner, you are accountable to your team, your stakeholders, and your customers. Here are some specific ways to be more accountable as a product owner: Set clear goals and expectations. Make sure that everyone on your team and all of your stakeholders understand what you are trying to achieve with the product. Communicate regularly and transparently. Keep your team and stakeholders updated on your progress, and be honest about any challenges that you are facing. Be willing to make tough decisions. Don't be afraid to say no to new features or requests if they don't align with your goals. Take ownership of your mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, but it's important to learn from them and move on. Be open to feedback. Using #SAFe but struggling to succeed as a Product Owner? Our next book is coming out in April 2024 and is dedicated to Product Owners and Product Managers to help them succeed with SAFe. SAFe, the Scaled Agile Framework, is .... well, a framework. And while it offers a template that organizations can adopt to scale their teams quite rapidly, as a framework it is designed to be adaptive. Hence, each company and each team should adapt it to fit its needs. This is true for Product Owners and Product Managers. The SAFe framework defines their role with a key set of responsibilities. Yet, to be successful at implementing SAFe and building the right products for their customers, they need to: - Be empowered - Rapidly validate ideas and solution before a full commitment - Experiment - Work with the Product Team to ideate new solutions - Be responsible for solving a problem, not for delivering specific Features - Collaborate between Product Owners and Product Managers - Break the command-and-control hierarchy - Always, always, always, adopt a Product Thinking mindset that starts from understanding the customers and their needs. - And, measure the outcomes delivered. These are not easy things to do. In many organizations, these require some serious changes.
