I always enjoy reading Simon Ricketts's enlightening posts - so firstly a thank you. I challenge anyone not to have sympathy with the Chief Executive of M&S. I often write about the plight of our town and city centres, the importance of footfall, vitality and vibrancy and it pains me to see Government failing to grasp the critical importance of anchor high street retailers (as if business rates aren't already pitted against them). The article serves to highlight the tension between decarbonisation and heritage - something I see play out on a micro-level every day - with owners of listed buildings often left to live in dickensian accommodation; being denied simple benefits like double grazing. Many of the heritage assets we treasure were controversial and bold at the time, but built in a pre-planning age; the modern day equivalent are rare, all too often bogged down in planning. How we are going to tell the story of how places continued to evolve - again something that often contributes to a cherished townscape. This case also illustrates my gripe that the construct of national heritage policy allows far to much subjective judgement - empowering the decision maker to reach whatever decision they like often with limited justification. I certainly don't want to trample on our most prized heritage assets but surely we've realised that dead high streets and climate change are a greater threat to our existence and success. I hope that a modicum of balance is restored. The views expressed above are my own .... ... and need not reflect those of Chapman Lily Planning etc etc.

Yesterday, I stumbled upon a "fly-through" video of my old high school's new building. The new building exemplified modernity, collaboration, and innovation—a stark departure from the memories I held of my own high school experience, now a distant 15 years (yikes!) ago. This sparked some reflection.... Why is it educational institutions like high schools have seamlessly transitioned into contemporary, collaborative spaces, while many workplaces remain tethered to dated structures of the past? Reflecting on many offices I have been and worked in, I'm reminded of their compartmentalized, dimly lit configurations—a design ethos that now feels conspicuously antiquated. In light of the dynamic shifts in work culture and environment (especially since the pandemic), shouldn't the evolution of educational spaces serve as a poignant indicator of what the next generation will expect from their professional environments in the coming 5-10 years? Today, there is a palpable preference for environments that nurture collaboration, inspiration, and adaptability. For organizations clinging to the architectural relics of yesteryears, there lies a critical imperative to reconsider their spatial strategies. Failure to acknowledge this evolving paradigm may jeopardize their ability to attract and retain top talent, as the dissonance between educational and professional environments becomes increasingly apparent. It is a sobering reality that students now enjoy educational facilities that far surpass the aesthetic and functional standards of many professional workplaces. As stewards of organizational culture and progress, it is our responsibility to help usher in and embrace workplace transformation. And congratulations to GAHANNA-JEFFERSON PUBLIC SCHOOLS, DLR Group, Schorr Architects, Inc., and Ruscilli Construction on a beautiful new high school! #WorkplaceReflection #OrganizationalEvolution #FutureOfWork #TalentRetention
