As ocean rates near a two-year high, how can shippers navigate increasingly turbulent waters? The answer: it’s complicated. “The decision to ship is inelastic,” says Nathan Strang, Flexport’s Director of Ocean Freight. “[Businesses] need to ship their goods to get them to market, and then face the choice of passing through that cost to the end-consumer, or absorbing the cost against their revenue.” Read the rest here → https://flx.to/costs

Have ocean freight rate spikes related to the Red Sea conflict finally peaked? There are some indicators that are saying yes. Personally I believe yes. I see a slow softening of the market about to unfold. Carriers have been testing the market to see how far they could push it. Why won't the high rates stick? ⬇ Global demand: Still holding/ relatively low. ⬆ Global capacity: Still abundant. ⭐ Global Shippers: Have options. However, the conflict itself is far from over. In a separate article from CNBC, Charles van der Steene, Maersk's Regional President for North America told reporters: “Unfortunately, we don’t see any change in the Red Sea happening anytime soon,” “We’re advising them the longer transit routes could last through Q2 and potentially Q3." TPM will be interesting this year that is for sure. #redsea #oceanfreight #globaltrade #internationallogistics

TRADE ALERT- we have seen a lot of stories on the soaring ocean freight rates. I used FreightWaves SONAR to review ocean freight bookings and demand and yes we all know there is a disconnect since demand is not soaring yet prices are heading upward. I dive into the metrics of what's driving the costs. Container crunch is here. DHL Global Forwarding Goetz Alebrand was one of the early logistics companies warning about this in my reports. With peak shipping season underway, Xeneta warns rates could climb further, impacting consumer prices significantly. This echoes pandemic-era supply chain chaos, pushing logistics managers to secure premium rates for space guarantees. Beside the logistic costs incidence on the product price, this kind of situation impacts more companies operating on the spot market. When you negotiate 1 year or more contracts, the companies can mitigate the natural market price fluctuations.
