Happy American Independence Day. Some celebrate with fireworks, barbecues, and family gatherings, while others stay at home. Whatever your plans, it’s likely that your dog will need extra care to cope with July 4th celebrations. Tips for Keeping Your Dog Safe and Calm: • Create a Safe Space: Set up a quiet, comfortable area where your dog can retreat from the noise and commotion (see last month’s Training Tidbit).. • Stay Calm and Reassuring: Your dog takes cues from you, so staying calm and comforting can help ease their anxiety. • Avoid Fireworks: Keep your dog indoors during fireworks displays to prevent them from getting scared and running away. • Identification: Check that your dog has up-to-date identification tags and is microchipped, just in case they get frightened and run off. • Exercise Earlier: Give your dog plenty of exercise earlier in the day to help them relax in the evening. • Distract and Soothe: Use toys, chews, or calming music to distract and soothe your dog during loud events. • Add white noise such as fans and air conditioning units, as well as white noise generating apps, and turn on TV or radio for additional masking sound. Let's make this July 4th enjoyable and stress-free for everyone, two-legged and four. Happy Independence Day! #Happy4thOfJuly #IndependenceDay #DogCare #JoyfulDog #VirginiaDogTrainer #DogTrainer #TimetoTrain

Whether or not you're planning your own Independence Day celebration, it's important to take precautions to keep your pets safe before, during and after Fourth of July festivities. 🎆Make sure your pets have identification tags with up-to-date information. 🎆Make sure the environment is safe and secure. If your neighbors set off fireworks at an unexpected time, is your yard secure enough to keep your pet contained? 🎆Leave your pets at home when you go to parties, fireworks displays, parades and other gatherings. 🎆Loud fireworks, unfamiliar places and crowds can all be very frightening to pets, and there's great risk of pets becoming spooked and running away. 🎆Keep your pets inside if you or your neighbors are setting off fireworks. 🎆Keep sparklers, glow sticks, fireworks, charcoal and kabob skewers away from curious pets.

🎆 Don't be like this buckaroo, let's enjoy a dazzlingly safe July 4! 🎆 While fireworks can spark up your celebration, it's important to be aware of precautions. Thousands of firework-related injuries send people to the hospital each year, especially during Independence Day. At UM UCH, we want you to have a fun and mishap-free holiday. Here’s what we recommend: - Leave fireworks to the professionals whenever possible. - Only use legal fireworks and follow all local regulations. - Always supervise children closely around fireworks.
