PV modules don't always produce power at their maximum capacity. So, it often makes economic sense to size an inverter to have lower performance than the PV array. The ratio of a PV module's maximum power reported at Standard Test Conditions (STC) to maximum AC power rating of inverter at reference conditions is measured as the DC/AC ratio. Optimal DC/AC ratio values depend on: -- PV module technology, -- mounting, -- inverter efficiency, -- geographic location, -- a level of radiation, and -- temperature. Influenced by imperfect information during the design phase, many solar PV projects incorporate unnecessarily large inverters. This adds to the overall costs of the project. As can be seen in the picture, 1-min data provides a more accurate reading of produced PV electricity (PVout) when compared to 15-min and 60-min data. Solar IV curves show the current and voltage characteristics of a particular PV cell, module or array; the benefits of IV curve testing are significant. In addition to measuring the short circuit current (Isc) and open circuit voltage (Voc), curve testing also measures all of the operational points in between these values, including the current and voltage of the maximum power point (MPP) and hence the maximum power value itself. The shape of an IV curve can be assessed to diagnose performance issues in ways that traditional test methods cannot.
