#Savic Motorcycles, an #Australian #electricmotorcycle startup, has delivered its all-electric motorcycle to the first customer, just months after high-speed testing at the iconic Phillip Island race track. The customer, Marc Alexander, 53, is an experienced rider, having owned multiple motorcycles in the past, like the #Ducati Streetfighter V4S and #BMW R1200GS. He said his delivery could not come soon enough, and says the future of motorbikes is electric. “I look forward to the super responsive instant torque, not filling up with fuel ever, and the brilliant riding experience that electric motorcycles offer,” he said. “There’s something truly amazing about the quiet, responsive acceleration, and the focus it brings to your ride. I believe that electric is the future of propulsion, and I’m excited to be part of this journey with Savic Motorcycles. “Putting money down as the first #Victorian customer in 2018 was my way of supporting an innovative Australian company and getting to enjoy a class-leading electric motorbike.” Company’s founder, Dennis Savic says the C-Series motorcycle includes an electric motorcycle drivetrain that had to be integrated into a lightweight aluminium frame with the classic lines of the motorcycle.  In the top-spec Alpha variant, it produces up to 60 kW of power. This variant has a starting price of $26,990. It includes a 16.2kWh battery and 60kW motor that delivers 200Nm torque and acceleration to 100km/hr in 3.5 seconds in its top-of-the-range format. The C-Series Delta starts at $19,990 ride-away. It’s equipped with a 14.2kWh battery system outputting 40kW and over 140Nm. Both bikes are developed on Savic Motorcycles’ SM1 production platform which offers a modular architecture for different battery, motor and inverter technologies. Savic Motorcycles began its journey back in 2016 and since then has developed six prototypes of the C-Series. Along the journey, the Melbourne-based startup has raised $1.22 million from 411 investors to get the motorcycle to where it is today, marking the first customer deliveries. According to the company, it is first high-performance electric road bike that’s designed and assembled in #Australia for passionate motorcyclists who care about a cleaner future. It says there are another 200 eager customers ready to take it onto the track.

However, the high initial acquisition cost of electric two-wheelers is one of the key market factors restraining the electric motorcycles and scooters market demand. R&D activities can help to significantly reduce the cost of electric motorcycle. This is a massive market for startups offering solutions. One of the startups is MAKA Motors. MAKA Motors is an electric vehicle (EV) startup founded in 2021 by Raditya Wibowo and Arief Fadillah. Serial 1, the in-house electric bicycle company originally started by motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson in 2020, has been purchased by Florida-based mobility specialist LEV Manufacturing. Harley-Davidson split off the company as its own entity, Serial 1 Cycle Company, in 2021. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Venture capital firm Lane VC, which specializes in mobility tech companies, is also involved. Serial 1 began as a market-broadening effort by the heavyweight American motorcycling icon, and coincided with another branding push in the form of the LiveWire motorcycles, a line of all-electric full-size motorcycles that was also eventually spun off by Harley and is now the publicly traded company LiveWire. Serial 1 ebikes, such as the RUSH/CTY model, are high-end ebike offerings with styling cues from Harley-Davidson’s motorcycle history; indeed the name “Serial 1” refers to the first motorcycle Harley-Davidson produced - essentially a bicycle with a small motor attached - in 1903. Hero to Zero!   No this is not a story of failure, but indeed something that can help Hero Motocorp continue to write their success story!   Before we get into that, did you know, India is the largest motorcycle market in the world, and motorcycles contribute to ~60-65% of overall 2W sales.   Hero MotoCorp owns the entry level motorcycles segment with ~80% market share, built around the workhorses, preferred by the rural and bottom of pyramid segment of buyers. But these are value buyers - the ones that make you work really hard to make money off of!   Tables are turned in favour of Honda when it comes to scooters and Royal Enfield when it comes to premium bikes.   Now Hero wants to capture the fancy of premium bike and scooter buyers and they have the cash, manufacturing and sourcing prowess and distribution network!   They're betting heavily on the electric future and seemed to have invested $60m in Zero Motorcycles Inc. of the US and will be bringing them to India, manufacture them locally. Some years back, they invested in Ather Energy and then recently launched the Vida in their attempt to capture the still nascent e-scooter market.   But here's a "spanner in the wheel", electric motorcycles haven't really taken off in India, yet, and while I know of many start-ups churning out wonderful products like Ultraviolette Automotive, Orxa Energies, Matter, Tork Motors etc., what gives, other than the usual EV adoption niggles? Here are a few thoughts   1. The motorcycle market is dominated by the frugal commuter segment - lower cost of acquisition vs power and performance 2. Weight vs power requirements vs agility demanded by motorbike users is not an easy balance to achieve 3. Electric scooters are able to offer fabulous performance in terms of power, while being utilitarian and fun to drive 4. At >INR 1.5L price points, people are looking for much more than getting from point A to point B - brand for bragging rights, superior reliability, etc. Now will this change with Hero bringing in Zero, remains to be seen! Still related to my previous post, would like to share with all of you the sadden news all of our e-Mobility this weekend of the file for bankruptcy of Cake motorcycles 🏍️…🙁😢😩 If something always puzzled me on the motorcycle world was its own momentum and pace..when I landed in the motorcycle world in 2014, emission standard was still the Euro 3 (for cars Euro 5…) and moreover it was clear that the electric ⚡️ powered transition would take way longer than in the 4-wheeled world… Whilst the Nissan Leaf Mk.I, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, the Tesla Model S or the VW e-Golf were already showing the path, in my endless visits to motorcycle 🏍️ Dealers and Importers no one was looking forward to the e-Mobility transition.. The price sensitivity of the Urban commuting market, the ridiculous fuel consumption and low maintenance costs of the ICE powered 125cc units meant that it would take years before BEV powered 2 wheelers to even get close to the volumes of the ICE powered ones..🛵🏍️ And, surprisingly, there was no difference between more matured BEV markets than less matured ones..I got the same feedback and market outcomes in 🇪🇸 than in 🇩🇪..it seems that such tough market conditions made first victims..quite a pity it was a really interesting project and Product portfolio…🛵⚡️😢

So, motorcycle news. I thought there would be just one post and that's it. But no 😁 The motorcycle was delivered to me a few days back. Not in 15 minutes, of course, but quickly. They asked when I would come to see the pickup. What pickup? What do you mean what pickup — to transport the motorcycle to the riding spot 😀 The advantage of rental equipment is that you don't have to think about anything. This is also a disadvantage. I woke up an hour earlier, put on all the gear, and approached the bike. When I approach a rental one, it's already started! I once had a very old car. And a boat motor. I understand a few things. I found the ignition key. I found out how to open the fuel valve. I even managed to pour gas into the tank. But I couldn't start it. Experience in such cases suggests that it’s just like in business. Either there is no gas (investment), or there is no spark (the idea is so-so, no product-market fit). An hour of efforts in full gear did not lead to a result. I already started rehearsing the call to the dealer in my head. I even figured out what to say in response to the phrase "well, okay, bring it in, we'll fix it." And then my gaze fell on the instruction manual. That's where I should have started, you might say. But no, I’m an experienced motorcyclist, I even jumped off ramps when I was dumb. Why would I need an instruction manual? It's just like going abroad and working with a team. Everything seems clear. While trying to start the motorcycle, I knew for sure that I couldn't drain the battery. Because the motorcycle doesn't have a kick starter. And a dead battery means game over. So I stopped well before that point, and I had a resource for a pivot. In the manual, I found the startup algorithm: - turn on the ignition - turn on the choke (oh! Wow, what's that thing? It still exists in 2024?) So, I found it and the bike started with half a turn. If it weren't for my ego, I would have had a ride this morning.
