Kyriakos Mitsotakis : Dear friends, as Greeks we are surrounded by history and as Greeks we are acutely aware of the importance of that history, which is why evenings like this matter. Because as custodians of Greece’s ancient history, the preservation, protection, and promotion of Greek antiquity isn’t just important, it is inviolable, a duty and a commitment never to be broken. Yes, that means that part of my mission as Prime Minister is about ensuring the return of Greek artefacts to Greece. But it also means that I have a duty to ensure that in doing that, these collections are also available to as wide an audience as possible. https://lnkd.in/duAV7PdV

As of 13 September 2023, UNESCO has verified damage to 289 cultural sites in Ukraine: 120 religious buildings, 27 museums, 109 buildings of historical and/or artistic interest, 19 monuments, 13 libraries… In Odessa alone, a city near and dear to me from childhood and to this day: • Odessa Fine Arts Museum • Odesa Archaeological Museum • Odesa Maritime Museum • Odesa Literary Museum • St. Nicholas Church • Transfiguration Cathedral • Chyzhevych’s residential building • Residential buildings Solomos • 268. Manuk-Bey’s mansion • Pommer’s mansion • House of Scientists (Tolstoy Palace) • Odesa Stolyarsky State Music Lyceum …the list continues and grows daily on UNESCO’s website. There’s a reason why our civilization has fewer creators than destroyers and consumers. And how each is remembered. Or forgotten as voiceless bystanders.

Ship of Theseus The Ship of Theseus is a thought experiment proposed by the ancient Greek philosopher Plutarch (1st-2nd century AD). The Ship of Theseus was preserved by the Athenians as a museum piece. Over time as its wooden parts decayed they were gradually replaced with new pieces of wood. The paradox poses the question: if every part of the ship is eventually replaced, is it still the same ship (Ship A)? If not then at what point does it stop being the original Ship of Theseus? What if one used the old pieces of wood and built a new ship (Ship B). Would that be considered the Ship of Theseus?

My fav paradox 💭 Use case in model risk management : As replacement of model components (input and/or calculation engine) are carried out, when model stop being the original? Technically, the model is going to be described in the model inventory either as new or existing?

This is precisely the reason why pure mathematicians fail at business (Issac Newton was a big one who failed at multiple businesses). The answer to this hypothetical question can be discovered if you consider the concept of depreciation from Finance. Any of part the ship is generally replaced when it's useful life is over and not until then. So, the question of creating a new ship out of the dismembered parts does not arise. Alternate explanations or debates are welcome.
