We’ve got a problem. The demand for support from bereaved military families far, far outstrips what we at Scotty’s can afford. We can’t keep up. We need to generate £2m this year just to stand still and yet there are over 2,000 children bereaved of a parent who served every year. I do not have an emotional response to death. During my time in the United States Marine Corps, I dealt with death on an all-too-often basis. I have been a part of hundreds of military funeral details, flag foldings, memorials, ceremonies, and more. I even escorted a fallen Marine home to their final resting place. To do what needed to be done and not become overwhelmed by all of it, I learned to process it as a logistical movement. This removed any feelings and emotions from the picture and gave me the ability to process tragedy in a fluid manner. For those that served in any role that deals with death consistently, you understand this. For those that do not, this just sounds cold. This coping mechanism served me well while in uniform but has left me in a weird spot when it comes to processing personal relationships. You see, I hear that someone has passed away and I have no emotional reaction to it. Wow does this cause issues with friends and family that want to know what is wrong with me? I have been labeled as “emotionally constipated” and “dead inside”. I bring this up because I have lost a few family members recently and my no-response reaction has not come across well to others. A few personal opinions I think most military families can agree with-- 1. Don't pity or victimize me just because our lives are different. 2. If you want to know about a potential conflict watch the news and educate yourself. Don't ask military families. 3. If people wanted to they would, and a lot of the time they don't. 4. I can be supportive of the military and frustrated with our government. 5. You're not going to guilt me for 'benefits'-- the recruiting station is open to everyone. 6. Not all individuals who serve in the military are morally upright. 7. People only care about the military when it directly affects them. 8. Don't ask intrusive questions about deployments or combat experiences unless we offer to share. 9. Recognize the sacrifices made by military families, not just the service members themselves. Spouses and children often bear significant burdens as well. 10. Military families appreciate genuine support and understanding, not just during times of conflict or crisis, but as part of our everyday lives.

Honoring Our Heroes: A Social Story for Memorial Day What is Memorial Day? It's a special day in the United States (on the last Monday of May) to remember all the brave men and women who served in the military. These are people who wear uniforms and protect our country. Why do we remember them? ️ Some of these heroes fought in battles to keep us safe, and some might not be here anymore because they died protecting our freedom. How do we celebrate? We visit cemeteries (special places where people are buried) to place flowers on their graves. We might see parades with flags and people in uniforms. (Flags represent America!) What can you do? Help hang a flag! Draw pictures to thank veterans!
