According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), over 20% of adult Americans (more than 50 million) experience some sort of mental illness, with 5% encountering more serious mental health concerns. A recent study conducted by Mental Health America found that over 55% of US adults with mental health concerns are not obtaining treatment. 19.1% of adults in the US are affected by anxiety, 8.3% are affected by major depressive episodes, 3.6% are affected by PTSD (these are just the top three) and that’s only for those who are actually evaluated and diagnosed. May is Mental Health Awareness month and while so many companies/employers/people in general encourage the wellbeing of others, what is really being done to support those in need? There is a lack of affordable and accessible resources. Take the time to listen. Provide the support and care. Stop and think before you speak, react, and make a decision. Evaluate how decisions impact a persons whole self because you don’t know what they have gone through in their past or what they are dealing with today. We lose too many people because of neglect, far too often.

Mental Health Awareness Matters Jim Morrison was known to have “real mental issues,” as stated by Robby Krieger, the guitarist of The Doors. There are discussions suggesting that Morrison showed signs of depression. Robby Krieger even mentioned that Morrison wrote the song “People Are Strange” when he was in a state of "suicidal depression". Depression is a complex mental health disorder that can affect anyone, regardless of their accomplishments or talents. It’s important to remember that mental health issues like depression are illnesses, not personal failings, or weaknesses. They can’t be overcome through willpower alone and often require professional help. Morrison’s life serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and treatment. His story underscores the need for understanding, compassion, and support for those struggling with mental health issues. It’s a poignant example of why we should continue to work towards eliminating the stigma associated with mental health and advocating for better mental health resources and support systems. May is Mental Health Awareness month! Mental health refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It encompasses how we think, feel, and behave, as well as how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is essential for overall well-being and affects every aspect of our lives. Stigma surrounding mental health stems from various factors. Lack of understanding and awareness can contribute to misconceptions and stereotypes. Cultural and societal norms often place a stigma on seeking help for mental health concerns, viewing it as a sign of weakness or personal failing. This stigma can lead to fear, discrimination, access to support and resources, and marginalization of individuals facing mental health challenges. We can all help end the stigma of mental health conditions by educating ourselves and others, using empathetic language, sharing personal stories, challenging misconceptions, and being supportive and non-judgmental towards those experiencing mental health challenges. By advocating for change, leading by example, and fostering a culture of understanding, we can collectively work towards breaking down the barriers and promoting acceptance and support for mental health.

Annually, World Mental Health Day on October 10th raises awareness and mobilizes efforts to support mental health. Mental health is a hot topic. This is good news. It means the stigma for mental health issues is slowly going away. Mental health issues are finally getting the attention they deserve. Healthcare workers and individuals feel they can discuss mental health more openly. However, that doesn't mean there isn't still work to do, however. As a whole, we often misunderstand mental health because it is hard to define. Additionally, mental health includes several areas. These areas involve one's social, emotional, and psychological well-being. Mental health affects thoughts, feelings, and actions. When we have positive mental health, we handle stress better, our productivity remains stable, and we realize our full potential.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it’s a more critical observance than ever: More than 20% of adult Americans (50 million+ people) experience some mental illness every year, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and many of them suffer in silence because of the stigmas associated with mental illness and mental disorders. We live in a world where physical health often takes the spotlight, but this month serves as a crucial reminder that mental health is just as important as physical health. Anyone who knows me well knows how important this topic is to my family. Mental health is something that we all have, and as with any health, we all have varying degrees of success, understanding, and willingness to admit how healthy we really are. I have personally had a myriad of views on my own mental health over the years, and without the support of my wife, Lana, frankly, I would not be in the condition that I am today. Mental health is such an important aspect of our lives that Lana owns and operates a counseling practice and is undertaking her PhD at the University of Arkansas. I am incredibly proud of her achievements and the course she has charted to help people, just as others have helped us.
