We’ve got one shot at this life, and to not be productive with what we’ve been given, to me, is a travesty. I think the biggest waste is when a human life is wasted. It’s unforgivable. ~ Mellody Hobson. Meet Mellody Hobson, a powerhouse in the finance sector, and co-CEO of Ariel Investments. Growing up in Chicago as the youngest of six, raised by a single mother, Mellody wanted to understand money at a young age, which led her to pursue a career in finance. Despite facing financial challenges, her academic excellence earned her a scholarship to Princeton University. After college, Mellody started as an intern at Ariel Investments, a Chicago-headquartered investment management firm run by fellow Princeton alumni John W. Rogers, Jr., where she quickly rose through the ranks. Today, as co-CEO, she's one of the driving forces behind the firm's success. Mellody's impact goes beyond boardrooms and balance sheets. She's an advocate for financial wellness, driven by her own experiences and the desire to help others. Through initiatives like the Ariel Community Academy, she's working to provide underserved communities with the tools for economic independence. Let's celebrate Mellody Hobson's incredible journey and her tireless efforts to create an inclusive financial landscape. #BlackHistoryMonth #ScaleWithKnown #WealthManagement #InvestmentBanking #FamilyOffice #FutureProof #WealthGap #Finance #ImpactInvesting

Driving Sustainability + Tech + Business | Enabling Careers in Climate | Aspiring Chief Sustainability Officer | Advocate for Immigrant/Low Income Backgrounds | Ex Google, Esri, WRI, Yale
A year out of college, I received a job offer from a top 10 private equity firm. A day later, I was told they didn't hire international students. Fast forward and I'm sitting at Yale School of Management, taking a class on private equity when the name of the firm comes up. Turns out, the team I would've worked for was at the cutting edge of ESG and climate finance work. While my peers expressed interest in working for the firm, I could only think about how it could've been me. How something so out of my control kept determining where I could go in life. When I originally applied to the role, all I wanted was to work in the environment, I knew very little about PE itself. I didn't know at the time how competitive PE roles were, nor that latines make up less than 3% of PE partners (2% for VC). In a way, ignorance made me believe in myself. But it also made me naïve to the system. An endless belief within a system that tries to take that belief away constantly. This is how ingrained the "American Dream" can be for immigrants. And I'm not the only one. I constantly receive DMs from students who go through the same. Yet I share these stories with the hope that one day they will be only that: stories of the past, left in history books and old LinkedIn posts. #sustainability #immigrant #internationalstudent #firstgen ************************************************* Follow how this low income Colombian becomes a Chief Sustainability Officer 😉🤗
