A recent documentary “Made in Europe: from mine to electric vehicle” from SIM2 KU Leuven, conducted by Peter Tom Jones, revealed how Europe searches for a fully integrated mine-to-EV value chain. 🛣 #aluminium is one of the strategic components of electric vehicles. Currently, EU EVs feature 283 kg of aluminium, enhancing sustainability and driving range compared to traditional cars. Because of its lightweight properties, several vehicle parts such as car bodies, chassis, battery housings, heat exchangers, closures and wheels are made from aluminium. Vice-President of the European Commission, Maroš Šefčovič, talks about the value of aluminium in the production of various transportation vehicles like cars and planes. Without aluminium, the survival of these strategic industries risk having to find lower-quality solutions and replacements for this critical raw material. A Hydrogen-Powered Car for the Public Road! Arriving in style, the team manager of Eco-Runner Team Delft pulled up at The Hague's Grote Kerk in their latest creation: the Eco-Runner XIV. During the event, they highlighted the importance of hydrogen in the energy transition and showed their progress since their founding in 2007. Their newest hydrogen-powered car is both efficient and safe, meeting all 1301 requirements of the RDW for public road use. Key features include improved front and rear lighting, side mirrors, and an even safer hydrogen system. In the upcoming month, the Eco-Runner XIV must pass four crucial tests: the static test, EMC test, hydrogen test, and dynamic test. The static test involves the RDW inspecting the vehicle's dimensions, angles, and materials. The EMC test checks for safe electromagnetic emissions and resistance to external radiation. The hydrogen test ensures the hydrogen system is leak-free and sensors are accurate. The dynamic test evaluates performance metrics like maximum velocity, manoeuvrability, and braking distance. After successfully passing these tests, the Eco-Runner XIV will receive its very own license plate! On June 17, 18, and 19, the Dream Team aims to break the current world record by driving 2056 km on a single tank of hydrogen, while following the route of the 'Elfstedentocht'. By driving this historic skating route multiple times, they want to emphasise the urgency of the energy transition. According to the company, this tech represents a leap forward in efficiency and functionality, driven by years of experience and customer input. Zinus’s latest improvements include faster charging capabilities, with current levels increased from 4,400A to 8,000A. The firm has also made the unit easier to connect and disconnect and enhanced the design to minimize service maintenance. Can your little coffee shop owner control your transport equipment requirements? In recent conversations on social media with groups of small café owners in the UK. I put a scenario to them that they can control the way their delivery's are made by food companies. One such scenario was to "ask your supplier to only deliver with diesel free trucks and diesel free transport refrigeration". Most were shocked that you would do that and did not understand why. Some thought that it meant you would be picking up your own food from the supplier. I went through all the responses and also shared my own experience as being a partner in a local café and the fact we did just that. With a simple conversation with the suppliers we, have reduced the diesel emissions faced by my local village thanks to the efforts of companies that want to listen like - ACCENT FRESH LIMITED and King Brothers of Peterborough. I now get only electric vans from Accent Fresh and only small Light commercial vans from Kings Brothers both running GAH (Refrigeration Products) Ltd units. I have proved that a little café conversation can go a long way. Image if the 7,000 other UK café owners in that group all turned around and said that same thing. I have been upgrading the refrigeration units in the café to non HFC- HFO refrigerants. I will be asking the transport supplier's soon to start to ask their suppliers the question of when can they get equipment with natural refrigerant options in their transport units. Just as uncomplicated as a diesel: the new MAN eTruck from LoadFox's plant logistics drives, loads and delivers effortlessly and extremely efficiently. The new MAN eTGX has been in regular use for MAN's own logistics service provider LoadFox since November 2023. Covering 600 kilometres with intermediate charging only during driving breaks is no challenge. Following successful journeys between MAN sites Dachau and Nuremberg, the MAN eTGX has now also been deployed on the Dachau-Salzgitter route. There, the electric lion proved that it is ideally suited for long-distance transport. With a typical load of 9 tonnes, the eTruck used around 0.97 kWh/kilometre on the very demanding route over the Kassel mountains. That is less than half the energy required by a diesel vehicle. The experience gained with the eTruck on long-haul routes is important, so that such routes can soon be regularly operated electrically. The MAN eTruck and the LoadFox team have already impressively demonstrated in recent weeks that this will not be a problem in the future either.
