CALLING ALL TV TECHNOLOGISTS! What are your views on the complexities around format conversion? Is there enough knowledge of the pitfalls and how to maintain quality? What are people's experiences of it being done well (or more interestingly - done badly)? Many times I've come across the attitude that 'FFmpeg does that for us'. While FFmpeg is AMAZING (it powers so much in our industry!), I assume it is quite limited in this area. Up and down conversion of progressive content is easy, but once you add the complexity of interlaced sources and the need to change framerate, my belief is that FFmpeg alone would be unacceptable to any broadcaster who cares about picture quality. Standards (frame-rate) conversion has traditionally been the remit of 'big-iron' and I regularly see posts of people resurrecting old Alchemist units, when newer more efficient units can surely surpass what they do!? I know of 2 vendors offering real-time motion compensated processing in software - are these actually being used for tier-1/2 broadcast or are they still lacking and only suitable for the low-end of the market? Help me build my knowledge so I can pass it onto the next generation and continue to bang the drum for caring about quality! I talk about all these issues in my training sessions but it's always good to reference what people are actually doing. I'd love to you to share comments publicly but if anyone would prefer to share privately please DM me as I'm keen to know the current state of play from those responsible for it. Thanks in advance! #NeverStopLearning #FormatConversion #PAL #NTSC #InterlaceMustDie #ThinkPink #Q3MT

Give me a complex problem, and I'll give you a simple solution | PM and entrepreneur with a knack for turning messiness into strategy. | Owner of Howdy Curiosity
Being in the Trust and Safety space, you will encounter fringe cases that do not have an easy solution. If you're in a position of having to choose whether or not something should be taken down or someone should lose access to your platform, consider the Santa Clara Principles. I'll vastly over-simplify the Principles here, but when evaluating fringe cases, ask yourself what solution is: 1. Transparent (i.e., all users have access to the rules of the game and know what is/is not allowed, and what you as a company can do in the event that rules are broken) 2. Consistent (i.e., all users play by the same rules– it doesn't matter what country users are in, how much they're paying, or how prominent they are) 3. Repeatable (i.e., if the fringe case happens again, you can apply the same decision in the same way for the same reasons... without feeling icky about it) Further reading: https://lnkd.in/d7i4kwKV

Difference between pre-bid and post-bid impression in simple language… If you’ve worked with verification partners such as IAS and Double Verify, then even simpler for you to understand it. Pre-bid is the impression which your DSP makes, just before calling the ad server to place your creative on a publisher’s website. It will ensure that it adheres to your brand safety, viewability threshold, etc settings. Post-bid is the impression you track after the DSP and ad server publishes your creative on the website. Hence, you get a pre and post bid rate from your ad tech partners. #programmatic #media #digital
