Senior Operations Manager @ US Army | Hospital Administrator | Leading High-Performing Teams | Active TS-SCI
Today I attended my first networking/job fair event and realized I did not properly prepare. It was difficult to have a conversation with the recruiters because; 1. I did not research the companies to understand their business or the positions they are looking to fill. 2. I did not have my elevator backgroud speech prepared or rehearsed. 3. It was difficult to approach the table of a company with an unfamiliar name (because I didn't do my research). Lucky for me, I have some time to hone my job fair etiquette and take these lessons learned to better prepare for future events. All of my lessons learned were preached by various sources, but sometimes you have to learn the hard way. I did walk away with some contacts and a couple recruiters now have my resume, so I would still consider this a win.

Senior Project Engineer at JE Dunn Construction || Small Business Owner at Le Uccellino || Evans Scholar Alumni
Since it’s recruiting week for the JE Dunn Purdue recruiting team, I thought I’d share a few tips to help students prepare for the career fair this semester and know what we are looking for in the process. 1- Who you are: We want to learn who you are in the short time we have, so highlight the key items that make you stand out or that will help us have more insight into who you are. 2- Can articulate what you are looking for: We like to see students who have an idea in where they want to go for the summer, what role they would like, what they want to learn, and why they believe our company will meet their goals. 3- Why JE Dunn? (Or any other company): Do your research on the company. Find out what they do, and what it is about the company that interests you. Have questions prepared for the recruiters. 4- Confidence: Be confident in yourself and what you bring to the table. Make sure the conversation flows and have a back and forth conversation rather than letting it be one-sided. I always love going back to Purdue and getting to meet all the amazing students. Not only that, but helping students also prepare for the career fair whether they are looking into a summer internship with JE Dunn or any other company. It can be an intimidating process for the young students attending their first career fair, and I like to help out the students similarly to how I was helped by other industry professionals while I was a student in college. Boiler Up!

Navigating a job fair can be daunting, especially when it's such a big event. With our annual USAA Community and Veterans Job Fair in less than a week I thought it would be a good idea to give out some job fair tips! First, make a top 5 list from the employers listed on the link below and start researching those companies now. If you see a position you are interested in, go ahead and apply! Next, practice your elevator pitch! What are you going to say when you approach an employer's table? How are you going to introduce yourself, ask questions, and talk about your unique skills and experience? Finally, choose clothing that is professional and makes a great first impression. Dress as if you were going to an interview, wear dark colors, avoid perfumes, colognes, and distracting prints or jewelry. Don't forget to have fun and seize the opportunity to engage with recruiters face to face! You got this 😎
