Signalling a growing trend of settling in abroad among Indians, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that more as many as 87,026 Indians renounced their citizenship till June this year. In addition to this, more than 17.50 lakh people have given up their Indian citizenship since 2011, said S Jaishankar in a written reply. In his reply, the EAM told the Lok Sabha that 2,25,620 Indians renounced their citizenship in 2022, 1,63,370 in 2021, 85,256 in 2020, 1,44,017 in 2019, 1,34,561 in 2018, 1,33,049 in 2017, 1,41,603 in 2016, 1,31,489 in 2015, 1,29,328 in 2014, 1,31,405 in 2013, 1,20,923 in 2012 and 1,22,819 in 2011. He emphasised on the fact that a large number of Indian nationals are exploring the global workplace. Many of Indians who are going abroad for studies have chosen to take up foreign citizenship for reasons of personal convenience. The question is why? Why Indians are leaving their country?

Here are the key takeaways from the Deputy Prime Minister’s discourse: 🔹Industry goals: building resilience and sustainability in investment immigration industry. 🔹Environmental impact: investment immigration industry is responsible for less than 1% of the global emissions. 🔹Standards: European countries are strict with investors, while hundreds of thousands illegal immigrants enter EU countries without any Due Diligence and financial checks. St Lucia stands out as the only Caribbean state among the five with CBI programs that opted against joining the Memorandum of Understanding and raising the investment threshold for its citizenship by investment program. 'only' 1,692,978 French people are recorded as expatriates. OK - arguably this is about those voting at their local consulate... still... the number is astonishingly low. (the table below is the number of people enrolled on the election lists at their consulate in all 11 "circumscriptions" around the world"; Circumscription 11 includes every country from Ukraine to the SW Pacific.. and only 138,000 French expatriates!)! This is 2% of the 67.75 M population. OK! France is magnifique! and French people love their country (I'd love to go back one day too!), but 2% living overseas... come on! and in comparison, there is an estimated 600,000 to 800,000 NZ expatriates which is between 12% and 16% of the NZ population leaving overseas. On 25th September 2023, German embassy in India posts this tweet: https://lnkd.in/dmemCtDs My two cents: Germany's signing of Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement with India, for being vocal to attract skilled workers, indicates: 1. a labor gap/shortage when it comes to the supply of highly-skilled labor in Germany's domestic labor market. Two reasons come to my mind: 1a. many skilled Germans/foreign-residents (with permits or German citizenship) leaving Germany for better prospects outside Germany; 1b. the one's who are coming in are either not skilled enough or skill mismatch or just country-country-differences in applicability of skills which takes time to integrate. E.g. Indian doctors could take time to integrate in the German medical system because of institutional infrastructural differences). So this policy does not necessarily help to fill in the gap immediately, at least in the short-run (6-12 months time frame). There is an adjustment period (adjustment cost) to immigrants in the host country which is technically a cost to Germany. This cost appears to go unnoticed, and immigrants absorption in the domestic labor market appear seamless. However, in the long-run, the social cost of immigrants/immigration could either be higher or remain stagnated, continuing to reflect a supply shortage in the domestic labor market. What Germany should do then? Germany should be encouraging immigrants in the German education sector, get them ready to come out to take on the German industries at the technological level Germany is on/at. What is there in store for India? In the short-run, financial remittances from the Indian diaspora cannot be ignored, and could rather be encouraged to. In the long-run, the GoI should look at overseas Indian as a stock of domestic human capital sitting overseas, in possession of non-financial wealth, infusion of which could help in facilitating technological catch-up. Accordingly, GoI should encourage the return of Indian diaspora either in the form of short-term-residences which could also translate into relocation, or relocation. Just like incentives are being provided for attracting financial capital, incentives should also be provided for attracting human capital, particularly diasporic-human-capital. At the end of the day, human capital makes financial capital productive.

🗺️#MAPS: Brazilians living in North America According to Brazil's Foreign Affairs Ministry, there were 4.4 million Brazilians living outside of the country as of 2022, with 2.1 million located in North America — almost 47 percent. Over 1.9 million of these reside in the U.S. alone, making Uncle Sam’s homeland the one housing the largest community of Brazilians living abroad. Within the U.S. territory, the Brazilian consulates concentrating the largest number of expatriate residents are New York, with 500,000 Brazilians; Miami, with 475,000; and Boston, with 380,000. Behind these top 3, the cities with the biggest Brazilian communities are in Europe, with the UK’s capital London home to 220,000 Brazilians and 180,000 Brazilians living in Lisbon, Portugal.
