June 14, 2024 - Freshpet Interns in Bethlehem participated in the Intern Impact Day with over 300 interns in the Lehigh Valley with the Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley. Interns worked with Meals on Wheels in Allentown. They packaged emergency food boxes and made greeting cards.
For Katie Branch, opening the first Chick-fil-A in her hometown of Pine Bluff, Arkansas was a dream come true. Beginning her career in the Information Technology industry, Katie discovered her passion for mentoring others by working with young professionals and leading a program of interns and apprentices. This experience inspired her to reevaluate her career path and led her to apply to own and operate her own Chick-fil-A restaurant.
Today, Katie pours into 100 full- and part-time Team Members in her restaurant – helping others see their own potential. “I love you guys, I care about your future,” Katie says to her Team Members, similar words she used to encourage interns through her 20-year IT career.
Save time Wednesday, July 26th at 11 am, and join us online for our Zero Hunger Intern presentations. The interns, winding down their ten-week internships, will share research focused on a hunger-related issue of their choice. Interns analyze the problem and present recommendations for practical solutions.
Join Garreth Bartholomew, who was placed with Alive & Thrive and Fawad Mohammadi, who was placed with ACDI/VOCA as they explore “Cultural Competency within Food Accessibility in the New South. We are exploring the concept of ‘cultural competency’ in food – what does it mean, what does it look like, how is has food policy like post-pandemic child nutrition programs integrated the concept. Drawing on our experiences given our internships and interviews within our organizations on how complicated culturally appropriate food is on an international nutrition scale. We then examine the issue of culturally appropriate food accessibility domestically, focusing on the South, where diversity in food choices is often limited in spaces such as campus dining halls and food pantries. We discuss efforts to make culturally relevant and appropriate food accessible to students and pantry clients, using case studies such as the potential and pitfalls of integrating Halal food in these spaces.”

Our interns had a chance to ask a group of CHS leaders some questions at our headquarters in Inver Grove Heights, Minn., in a recent panel event. Mary Kaul-Hottinger, Gary Halvorson, Rick Dusek, and Brandon Smith met with summer interns, both in-person and virtually. The discussion covered a variety of topics including: setting career goals, receiving feedback, culture and employee retention and more.
"Always be willing to change. Look at the possibilities. Have agility and adaptability. That's the future; things change fast." - Kaul-Hottinger
"At a company like ours, you can start in one place and follow a passion to other places that might feed a curiosity or help with your professional development... Challenge yourself and chase your passions. It's all fuel for a career." - Halvorson
"Try different experiences to help you figure out what you like and if the company is where you'd want to grow your career. Always be learning and meeting people." - Dusek
"There's always cycles in business, good and bad. Be known as a person that leans in, asking ‘How can I help?' People will remember those tough times and how you showed up as a leader to help." - Smith

Hello everyone, This week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week 2024! To celebrate this, I recently spoke to Finley an intern on the ClwydAlyn Project Search programme.
For his Second Rotation Finley has been working as a Kitchen Assistant in local Care Home.
Please read below to hear about his experiences on his rotation.....
Hi my name is Finley, for my Second rotation I have been working as a Kitchen Assistant in a Local Care Home.
My day to day tasks include:
Cleaning surfaces, laying the tables and serving the puddings to the residents and folding the napkins. I also put out the sauces, Load and unload the dishwasher, preparing the vegetables, helping to make the sandwiches and grating the cheese. Making sure the kitchen is tidy by putting things away, helping to clean the fridge and putting the food away in the fridge.
What things have you found difficult on your rotation?
I have found it difficult to learn how to move things safely I now a trolley to help me. I also found folding the napkins quite tricky as its quite fiddly so I asked for help with this. Setting the tables up quickly has also been hard.
What skills have you learnt on your rotation?
I have learnt about Customer Services and Product presentation and improved my skills in both of these areas.
My listening skills have gotten better by listening to the staff and residents. I have also improved my peeling skills.
What have you been doing on Project Search this term?
Recently I attended a reverse Jobs fair and met with employers and talked about my skills and experience.
I have completed my Food Hygiene Level 2 and a first Aid awareness course.
We have done some classroom work on Health and Safety and done a bit of interview practise.
For my rotation I had an interview which we prepared for by going through the questions before hand this made me feel prepared.
Well done Finley you are doing amazing on your rotation!

If you are interested in culinary science or food science I highly recommend reading this article to learn about the path I took and how it could help you . It dives deep into the benefits of internships and getting involved at your school and how it will shape you for your future jobs.
Hope you enjoy!
Such a great reflection. Most advisers and students that have interns for their studies do not understand the sacrifice it takes to leave their homes, and make hard decisions to reach both their professional and personal goals. Earning opportunities is hard enough. However, opportunities should also aim to fulfill aspirations, respect common needs such as: eating on time, drinking enough water, having a proper place to rest, and safe installations to perform their activities. Opportunities are hope, and should never compromise physical and mental well being. Interns deserve a place on discussion tables, their names written in papers they participated in, and have the ability to show what they have learned and what they are made of. Interns are NOT less. They also have degrees, they also have knowledge, they CAN supply added value to any field, and they represent an opportunity to show how good a college and their advisors are for the rest of the world. No matter where they come from, or their background. 📝
“You’ve got interns for that”
”you’re so lucky to have interns to do the sorry chores”
My biggest pet peeve….. I do have interns you’re correct but, I’ll not treat them like I’m above them.
There’s two kinds of leaders one that demands respect and one that earns respect. Yall guess who gains true respect and who gains nominal work atmosphere respect.
These interns give up 6 months of their time to come under our care to learn and grow. We poor everything we can into them so they can go out and be successful. If that means I wash a trailer or clean a feed bunk on a day that there is something they can really gain knowledge from so be it. In return when I do ask them to do something they’re more than willing and do it with a positive attitude.
Food for thought!
What type of leader are you?
How do your employees view you?
Do better, be better, produce better for our future!
