This week's #schoolshooting in Perry, Iowa, nudged #schoolleaders across the nation to revisit their school emergency guidelines. School shootings also cause #SROs and law enforcement agencies to review their active shooter protocols. But an often less considered area is preparedness issues associated with the local/regional hospitals that receive the injured from these shootings. School #principals typically send staff members to the hospitals to be with injured #students and staff when a shooting occurs. Once the shooting has stopped and the event has ended with law enforcement intervention, the ripple effect can equate to a surge of patients being received by local hospital emergency departments and the associated medical facilities. #Schoolsafety and emergency planning teams should consider connecting with medical facility safety officials to refine their guidelines for a school shooting incident. #Hospitalsecurity officials should consider how a school shooting might impact their facilities. #IAPSC President Michael S. D'Angelo, CPP, CSC and I co-authored an article in 2019 about securing hospital emergency departments and related medical facilities in the aftermath of a school shooting. School nursing isn't just about distributing band-aids and dealing with tummy aches. According to the CDC, firearms are now the leading cause of death in children and teens, ages 1 to 19. As schools nationwide reopen, the cloud of school shootings once again looms over educators' and children's heads. Shockingly, at the current pace, school shootings are on track to reach an unthinkable number of 400 incidents this calendar year, compared to 303 in 2022. This article examines data on school gun violence through a public health lens and discusses how school nurses could play a role in preventing violence. #SchoolViolence #GunViolence #SchoolNursing

Neurodivergent.| Founding CEO and director of My Trauma Is Chronic, But I Am Iconic!!|Expert by Experience at SLAM NHS and Merton Local Authority.|Multipotentialite.
When victims are met with statements suggesting there is insufficient or no evidence to support their claims, it can be deeply harmful and invalidating. This response can further perpetuate a culture of disbelief and discourage survivors from seeking help or justice. It is important to recognize that evidence of trauma can take various forms, and not all experiences leave behind tangible proof. Trauma primarily affects a person's mental and emotional well-being, and the impact can be long-lasting. Therefore, it is crucial to approach survivors with empathy, compassion, and belief in their experiences. Research has shown that trauma can have significant effects on individuals, including symptoms such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and various physical health issues. The psychological and emotional toll of trauma can be immense, and survivors often require support and understanding to navigate their healing journey. Creating a safe and supportive environment where survivors feel heard, validated, and believed is essential. This can be achieved through active listening, providing resources for professional help, and promoting awareness campaigns that challenge the stigma surrounding trauma. It is worth noting that the legal system also acknowledges the importance of survivor testimony. In many jurisdictions, the testimony of survivors can be considered as evidence in legal proceedings, even without additional corroborating evidence. This recognition reflects the understanding that trauma can be difficult to prove through traditional means and emphasizes the significance of believing survivors. By promoting a culture that believes and supports survivors, we can contribute to a more compassionate and inclusive society. Together, we can work towards breaking down the barriers that survivors face and ensure that their voices are heard and validated. Please note that the information provided here is general in nature and should not be considered as legal or professional advice. If you or someone you know is in need of support, I encourage you to reach out to a qualified professional or a helpline specialising in trauma and abuse. #MTICBIAI #BelieveSurvivors #SupportingSurvivors #TraumaAwareness #ValidationMatters #EndTheStigma

I have decided to start watching the Channel 4 programme, To Catch A Copper. It is harrowing at points and shines a light into how those in power have a huge responsibility. While the show is highlighting the actions of police officers, I can't help but think that there is a risk that people see this show and think that it is just police officers. But the reality is, anyone who works with vulnerable people have a responsibility and duty to behave in a way which does not cause harm to those people. Social Workers, Nurses, Teachers, Carers, Paramedics, Medics and many other professions all come into contact with people who rely on them to care and protect them from harm. If like me, you have found yourself moved by what is in this show, remember that you have the power to call out poor practice. You can highlight when things aren't right and raise your concerns. Indeed, it is your duty to raise the concerns. Share them with the authorities because we are responsible for ensuring that services meet the standards the public expect. #socialwork #safeguarding #safeguardingcpd #education #professionalstandards #publicservices
