Succession is often viewed as a zero-sum game, where there can only be one winner and the rest are left out in the cold. Take the example of General Electric - Jeff Immelt became CEO, while Bob Nardelli and Jim McNerney left the company. At Microsoft, Kevin Turner and Tony Bates left after Satya Nadella was chosen as CEO. And at Disney, Bob Staggs and Kevin Mayer left after being overlooked for the top job. But does it have to be this way? Is there a scenario where everyone comes out ahead in the succession process? Can we strive for win-win-win, where the victor, the 'vanquished', and the organization all benefit?
