Google's LearnLM - "LearnLM is our new family of models fine-tuned for learning, and grounded in educational research to make teaching and learning experiences more active, personal and engaging." A very interesting release from google for education! The model aims for the below characteristics: > Inspire active learning: Allow for practice and healthy struggle with timely feedback > Manage cognitive load: Present relevant, well-structured information in multiple modalities > Adapt to the learner: Dynamically adjust to goals and needs, grounding in relevant materials > Stimulate curiosity: Inspire engagement to provide motivation through the learning journey > Deepen metacognition: Plan, monitor and help the learner reflect on progress Derek Lomas Mithilesh Thakkar Aditya Sharma #ai #learning #llm #models #education #digital

Global Education Industry Leader | Extensive sales & marketing experience | Edtech solution guru | Customer centred thinker | Speaker | Media | PR
With the rapid spate of announcements about LLM and education (eg tutors) from the big tech companies, you have to be clear that “we’re not going to use theirs, we’ll build our own” is a short-term strategy (and valid to get experience) until the time is right to switch. - If you’re an education organisation, it’s right to be piloting and learning right now, even if building your own ‘private’ version is your route. But ultimately, I feel some use cases (tutors and general chat tools) for LLMs will just be a straight SaaS solution like email, collaboration etc - If you’re an Edtech, then you’d better have a niche. Just saying “we’re going to build a better tutor” on a large language model is not a niche. You’ll get run over by the juggernauts of big tech. - Keep experimenting, keep coming up with smart ideas, and recognise that the ideas and the lessons from experimentation are the valuable output, not the tech stack that you may build, because tbh in the future that’s the easily replaceable bit. Now that Google have LearnLM, there’s no way that the other big tech companies will hang back, and that’s great news because equity issues will be reduced as a result
Wowza! A proud moment - we've already had an incredible response from our partners to our launch of LearnLM. A collaboration between Google DeepMind, Google Research and our Edu product teams, LearnLM represents a family of models fine-tuned for learning based on educational research. It will drive tutoring experiences for students and act as a teaching assistant for teachers across multiple surfaces, including Gemini (including in #GoogleClassroom). #LearnLM aims to make learning experiences more active, personal, and engaging for students, enabling teachers to spend more time with students. And, we're excited to share Khan Academy and several universities will be testing partners! Congrats to Hema (Bajaj) Misra from our partnerships team on all of the hard work here, along with so many from our product team for their work to get this out in the world (Muktha Ananda, Julia Wilkowski, and others I should mention!). #google #ai #genai #education Read more about LearnLM here: https://lnkd.in/gHgMRBDH

Another day, another upgrade - this time from Google. Their new family of models are fine-tuned for learning - based on learning science and exploring active learning. https://lnkd.in/e2HKMHH7 The technical paper is also well worth a read - "We focus on evaluation, because it is clear that a shared framework across (and even within) learning science, EdTech, and AI for Education is lacking, and such a framework would likely enable progress more than any single product" This underlines how important the benchmarking work is (https://lnkd.in/e5EpUEvU) and how important it is to have education experts shape the evolution of AI tools for education. Exciting times.

LearnLM and its impact on education. Do you foresee student to teacher ratios increasing as a result? I think it’s inevitable, as teachers increasingly become more efficient (and likely effective) at their jobs. One highlighted feature of what LearnLM is be able to accomplish: “On YouTube, a conversational AI tool makes it possible to figuratively “raise your hand” while watching academic videos to ask clarifying questions, get helpful explanations or take a quiz on what you’ve been learning. This even works with longer educational videos like lectures or seminars thanks to the Gemini model’s long-context capabilities. These features are already rolling out to select Android users in the U.S.”

IT Educator & Mentor ▪️ Community College Advocate ▪️ Doctoral Student | Empowering Students to Succeed in Tech
Google's new family of models, based on Gemini, is an education game changer. Mind blown! A few I am excited to try out: ⭐ YouTube - Conversational AI embedded in academic videos. Learners can "raise a hand" to ask clarifying questions or learn more. ⭐ Illuminate - Turns published academic research papers into AI audio discussions, providing overviews, key insights, and the ability to ask questions. ⭐ Learn About - My take - a highly personalized search engine. It guides you through a topic at your own pace with pictures, videos, web pages and activities. The possibilities are endless. As an educator, it's exciting and a little scary. Educators, which of these are you excited to try? #AlwaysBeLearning #HigherEducation #AIForEducation #NCCCS

Today, Learning Technology Solutions (LTS) at UIC launched the inaugural edition of the EdTech Student Newsletter, aiming to establish a transparent communication channel between our students' thoughts and use of learning applications and the dedicated team researching, facilitating, and supporting these tools. In this issue, we delve into the "how's" and "why's" of recently introduced applications such as Grammarly, provide practical insights on using Equatio, share students' experiences with social annotation tools and their perspectives on AI. Additionally, we extend an invitation for students to contribute ideas for future newsletters and participate in a survey. Recognizing the significance of incorporating the student viewpoint, many of these articles will be adapted for our Faculty and Staff newsletter. The insights gathered from interviews and surveys will play a pivotal role in informing LTS and UIC about future application adoptions, student trends, and guiding the evolution of our teaching and learning ecosystem. If you would like to take a closer look, the newsletter can be viewed here: https://lnkd.in/g8CCH8WK.
