Esteemed professionals from elite European football clubs and U.S. sports franchises converged to share their knowledge and experiences. Dr. Niko Mihic, MD, CFPC, former chief medical officer at Real Madrid, was among the key speakers, offering profound insights into the intersection of elite athlete care and general patient treatment. During his presentation, Mihić emphasized the critical importance of comprehensive medical histories and the necessity to delve deeper than initial diagnoses to optimize health outcomes. He discussed adapting personalized health strategies, managing modifiable risks, and the significant impact of microbiota on our immune system. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of physical activity in preventing sarcopenia and maintaining essential muscle mass for proper body oxygenation. The summit also featured insights from Gary O'Driscoll of Manchester United, who reminded us that elite athletes are first and foremost patients and people, "regardless of what is at stake in sporting terms." This gathering emphasized the invaluable cross-application of sports medicine techniques to enhance overall patient care and preventative health strategies. A really important piece of research here. What I'm also really impressed by is how the whole paper, and its key messages, can be delivered in simple, attractive, and short video format. An excellent way to provide sports providers, development officers, administrators and non-academics with the important pieces of information.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC)'s Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs) working group have recently published a series of 2023 updates, found here in the British Journal of Sports Medicine - https://lnkd.in/gZQWFYxd As the science in the field has significantly evolved, so has the understanding of the nuances of low energy exposure (LEA) exposure on various physiological and psychological pathways, including the complex interaction of LEA with moderating factors, and between body systems. These updates include a introduction to new concepts and clinical applications related to REDs; an updated Consensus Statement - 2023 International Olympic Committee's (IOC) consensus statement on Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs); and several supporting reviews that provide further context of the science that underpins the consensus statement, and an expansion of recommendations for clinical and research practice. These reviews include the development of a REDs Physiological Model that may assist the diagnosis of underlying causes of problems associated with LEA; An updated REDs Clinical Assessment Tool—V.2 (IOC REDs CAT2); Primary, Secondary and Tertiary prevention of REDs; inclusion of the crossover of Mental Health issues associated with REDs; Research Methodology; and Best Practice Body Composition Considerations.

As team physician at Almere City FC I am passionate about exploring football medicine's intricacies. Constantly uncovering factors vital for our players' health, our goal is to optimize their performance on the pitch. Our first discussion tackles head impacts in football - a prevalent concern stemming from aerial duels causing concussions among players. In the Netherlands alone, there have been several collisions during the first half of the 2023-2024 season, in one recent case leading to unconsciousness and a severe concussion of a goalkeeper leading to hospital admission. In other sports, like rugby, multiple studies highlight higher risks of neurological diseases and brain impairments among former professional rugby players. Despite this extensive research, investigations into football's long-term head impact consequences remain limited. Well this was a first... Holding a microphone but not murdering Build Me Up Buttercup on the karaoke.
