In April, job openings fell to their lowest level since February 2021, showing signs that the post-pandemic labor boom is cooling off. If you’re currently looking for a new job, don’t let this number dishearten you. There are certainly a ton of open jobs out there, and companies eager for good talent. As a recruiter for 28+ years, I am here to help connect you with companies in need of your exact brand of talent. I can coach you on the job search, provide the right introductions, set up interviews and help negotiate the terms of your employment. While it’s part of my job to pay attention to employment trends, I don’t pay too much mind to these numbers, which always go up and down. At the end of the day, finding the right person for the right job takes experience and skill, not employment trends.

Some encouraging news from Edelman: When it comes to their own healthcare, people trust their employers more than they trust their government, the media or the healthcare system itself. “Michael, that’s not entirely surprising, given the competition.” Okay, you may be right. Still. 15K people across 16 countries participated in this global survey, and when asked the specific question about trusting institutions to “do what is right in addressing my health needs and concerns,” they rated employers higher than their trust in business in general, non-government organizations, government or media. The pandemic may have played a part in this shift in trust to employers. With “contradictory expert advice” and “changing health recommendations” amok in the world, employers became one place to turn for solid information. Employers who lean into information-sharing have the biggest advantage here. Transparency is a big part of trust, and organizations that can answer healthcare-related questions clearly for their employees always seem more reliable and trustworthy. This is true beyond healthcare questions, in fact, but Edelman’s poll is an important reminder that communication and leadership are essential aspects of HR.

At last count, there were 8.5 million job openings in the US and only 6.5 million unemployed people. This 2-million-person gap presents a bit of a quandary for hiring managers, and it’s worse in some industries than others. The construction industry is faring particularly badly, and a recent report from the Associated Builders and Contractors trade association claims that we’ll need over a half million workers in that field alone in this calendar year. But even for information workers and professionals in other fields, hiring is a problem. To harness an advantage in hiring in this market requires partnering with outside resources. When hiring for higher-level jobs, a recruiter like those of us at Gables Search Group puts you at a distinct advantage. But for entry-level jobs, sometimes, you have to great creative — looking to local high schools, community colleges, trade schools, and workforce development organizations.
