If you’re using the terms “orientation” and “onboarding” interchangeably, you’re doing it wrong. Orientation is the immediate process that happens when a new person shows up on their first day. It typically includes a lot of paperwork, signatures and basic IT business. Onboarding, on the other hand, is a longer process. It starts with orientation, but ultimately it’s a more comprehensive process of integrating people into company culture and helping them thrive in their roles with the right support. “So, Michael, which is more important?” Both. You have to be excellent at both! Think of orientation as the first step of onboarding. But onboarding lasts for weeks. Ideally, it’s sometimes — but not entirely — a formalized process. And it’s especially important, by the way, for remote employees.

If you’re using the terms “orientation” and “onboarding” interchangeably, you’re missing the mark. Orientation is what happens on a new hire’s first day. It’s all about paperwork, signatures, and getting the basic IT setup. Onboarding, however, is a more extended process. It starts with orientation but goes much deeper, integrating new hires into the company culture and providing the support they need to thrive. “So, Jennifer, which is more important?” Both. You have to excel at both! Think of orientation as the first step of onboarding. But onboarding lasts for weeks and ensures new hires feel supported and integrated. This is especially vital for remote employees.

Onboarding new employees Effective onboarding is crucial for new employees to hit the ground running and make valuable contributions early on. However, the overload of information and meetings can be overwhelming for new hires. Here are some suggestions to make the onboarding process smoother: - Make sure employee has access to all servers and shared files. - Start with the big picture: firm norms, organization charts, and seating charts. I’ve become the new employee best friend instantly by providing a seating chart, color coded by team so, they don’t have to remember names and location. (Little things make a big difference) - Encourage questions to avoid anxiety and increase efficiency - Dose information at a logical pace and sequence, starting with basics and building from there. Don't bombard them with information. - Avoid internal terminology and use full product names - Limit introduction meetings to key people; those they will interact with closely (not weeks of marathon meetings) - Focus on key products instead of overwhelming them with too much information - Provide documentation for future reference Remember, effective learning takes time and the onboarding process is just the beginning. By helping new employees start their job with ease, they can become full participants faster and make a valuable impact on the organization. #onboarding #settingupforsuccess #welcometotheteam #ProductiveBeginnings https://lnkd.in/eJWE5bBc

💡 #RecruiterTrainingTips: 009 Creating an Onboarding Plan Without a Tech Solution A recent poll showed 31% of Recruiting Managers indicated they haven't created an onboarding plan for their new employees because they need a technology solution. Although a platform or software solution is helpful when tracking onboarding plan completion or to increase engagement, it shouldn't be the main blocker. Research from Click Boarding shows 69% of employees are likely to stay for at least 3 years and organizations may experience 50% greater new hire productivity when a standardized onboarding plan is provided. So why wait? The benefits of having a plan far outweigh the risks of not having a structured onboarding plan for new employees. My first onboarding plan was on a Word document. Excel can be a great tool for adding due dates and color coding completion. 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲. These are the 5 most important functions of an onboarding plan: 1. Ability to create a template (managers can copy and edit for each new employee) 2. Centralized location for visibility (managers can view employee progress) 3. Ability to list tasks in order 4. Ability to include due dates 5. Ability to show completion Free resources such as Trello or Google Sheets can provide these most important functions where managers and employees can discuss onboarding task completion during their 1:1 conversations. As long as your employee has a set of tasks, associated due dates, and they can cross items off their list as completed (to stay on track and engaged), you have an onboarding plan to support your new employee's learning and development. If you're interested in knowing more about specific content to include (to provide the best experience), take a look at my recent article: https://lnkd.in/gn_UiVUq #recruiterenablement #onboarding #onboardingsuccess
