The young adults who graduated from higher education this year are a particular set. They want to work at companies that align with their values and have a lot to offer them personally. They’re not necessarily gravitating toward shiny flashy tech jobs, but look for work that will be rewarding and stable. In fact, they’re applying for more government jobs than they used to, shying away from companies that have had big layoffs in the past few years. They care deeply about employer reputation, and read reviews before applying. They want jobs where they can come into the office, but don’t always have to. If you want to appeal to this demographic, working with a recruiter like myself can be a great way to sell yourself to Gen Z new grads. For 28+ years, I’ve been studying the talent market, noticing trends and helping align hiring managers with the ideal job talent.

“We make it an entry-level job, but require 3-5 years of experience.” This feels like the hiring direction of too many companies… My LinkedIn feed last year was filled with people talking about the struggles of the job search journey — full manuscripts of a job description, laughable pay, combining multiple roles into one, being ghosted by employers, etc. We’re seeing younger Millennials and Gen Z lash out against these hiring practices, and I think it’s justified. More people are realizing they have the leverage when they’re not afraid to speak out against shoddy hiring practices. I’m glad we didn’t have this issue at Electriq. We frequently hired new grads, plus we built out a robust onboarding and career advancement program. As more of Gen Z enters the workforce, equitable hiring and ethical business practices (like not abusing job descriptions and young candidate naiveté) will be front and center. Something to consider if you’ve had struggles hiring…

Interesting data point: since being eligible for employment at the age of 14, this is the longest stretch of unemployment (voluntary or otherwise) I have "endured" (not at all to suggest it has been difficult for me, and not at all to diminish the struggles of others going without work). I have read similar stories from folks - hundreds of submitted applications, staggering numbers of examples of folks being ghosted at all points of the recruitment process, final round interviews only to be told there are other folks with bigger metaphorical muscles or shinier teeth analogies gunning for the same job, et cetera... Add another one onto the pile if you're keeping score (102 days and counting). If you're hiring in Software Engineering leadership, however, do drop a note.

Real Estate Investor Relations Executive | Strategic Business Developer | Expert in Acquisitions & Valuation Underwriting | Driving Growth and Building Strong Financial Stakeholder Relationships
Kathryn Hardison, Austin Business Journal. Austin ranks as the seventh hottest job market in the U.S., according to The Wall Street Journal and Moody's. It's the top job market in Texas, surpassing Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. The ranking, now in its fifth year, evaluates cities based on factors like unemployment and wage growth, job and labor force growth, and labor force participation. Salt Lake City leads the ranking, with three Florida cities—Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tampa—following closely. Austin's high position is attributed to its strong labor force participation and its role as an affordable alternative to Silicon Valley. This appeal has attracted tech companies and workers, particularly during the pandemic. Despite layoffs at some tech firms, major investments by companies like Samsung Semiconductor, Tesla, and Apple suggest significant job growth potential. Tesla, rapidly expanding in the area, rivals H-E-B as the largest private-sector employer in Austin, ending last year with 22,777 employees at its gigafactory. #jobmarket #austinjobs #hiringtrends #employmentgrowth #techcareers #laborforce #workforcedevelopment #economicgrowth #austineconomy #jobopportunities #siliconhills #austintech #teslajobs #samsungcareers #appleinc #laborparticipation #employmentoutlook #texaseconomy #privatesectoremployment #gigafactoryjobs

I’m going to make a bold statement. And I invite you to join the conversation in the comments. ⬇️ But I want you to know that it’s still a great time to become a pilot. I’ve seen far too many posts lately that are creating fear and barrier to entry in this industry. YES - I will acknowledge that hiring has slowed down. However, it is still moving at an opportune pace; matching or beyond pre-COVID numbers. YES - it looks scary when you compare 2024 hiring predictions to 2022 or 2023 numbers. The industry is becoming competitive again; but not impossible. Don’t let this scare you. Keep working hard, attending events, volunteering, building time, staying involved; and you’ll end up in a great place. ✈️
