When I began my career as a recruiter 28+ years ago, tattoos were still discouraged in the white collar world. But things change rapidly. Now, when someone rolls up their sleeve or loosens their tie and a tattoo comes into view, no one really blinks. A University of Miami study a few years found that people who are tattooed are no more likely (and interestingly, sometimes even more likely) to land jobs than those who are not. I’m curious, if you hire within your role, if you have a point of view on this? To tattoo? Or not to tattoo? And if you already have a tattoo, is it best to hide it when interviewing and even showing up for work? Or is it perfectly acceptable these days to showcase your authentic body art?

When Candidates Chase Lavishness Ever heard the one about the candidate who ghosted their interview because the waiting room wasn't five-star enough? Yes, it's true—some folks prefer their job opportunities served with a side of luxury. Picture this: you've got your best professional face on, ready to impress. Meanwhile, candidate number three takes one look at the interview room and decides it's not Instagram-worthy enough. Adios, potential career breakthrough! It makes you wonder—are we hiring for a job or for a spot in a Vogue photoshoot? Employers, take note: next time, maybe throw in some golden chandeliers and a red carpet. Who knows, it might seal the deal better than a killer resume! And candidates, remember: behind those fancy curtains might just be the job of your dreams. Advise for those looking for a job. 1. Your perspective employer will look at your social media pages. 2. Don’t post images of drugs, grass or you getting high. 3. Don’t post yourself or friends bragging about getting stoned. 4. Don’t post images or comments that can be confused with breaking the law. 5. Facial piercings, facial tattoos, spiked hair and dreadlocks can and most likely will get you shown the door. 6. Dress for the job, not the club. 7. If you cannot be on time for the interview, it can and will be assumed you can’t get to work on time. For those ignoring these suggestions, don’t whine that you can’t get a job, image sells.

It's #WorkforceWednesday, and we wondered when looking for a job, which do you think is more impactful to the hiring process—visible body art, your personality, or whether you fit into a company's culture? Some experts say your personality and lack of cultural fit may prevent you from getting hired over visible tattoos or piercings. Check out this Business Insider article about one person's experience and why she thought she was rejected because of her tattoos: https://lnkd.in/g82QpwEB What are your thoughts on the matter? "Wow, you graduated before I was born!" No one wants to hear that during an interview. So, I get where this question is coming from. Should you dye your grey hair? You want to land a job ASAP. You also want to stay true to yourself. For me, I say rock the grey. You don't want to work for someone who judges you based on your hair color. If you want to dye your hair, that's cool too. Take the job out of the picture: Being true to yourself is where it's at. #ageism #genx #babyboomers ♻ Repost to share the word. 🔔 Follow Colleen and Ageless Careers for career tips. 📰 Get your guide to countering 8 common issues for Gen X/Baby Boomer job seekers when you subscribe to the Ageless Careers newsletter (link in profile)

📸 I just received some new professional headshots, one included here, so I thought I'd post a bit of my advice to students and early career scientists here. 📸 Never underestimate the value of a good headshot. I have found having one at the ready has been really beneficial. While its easy to use a candid photo from your phone for social media its not always the best option while job searching on LinkedIn or to use for a speaking engagement and other professional needs. Ask yourself what you want your photo to convey to your intended audience (I wanted these to look professional but approachable) and give consideration to your clothing, jewelry, and makeup. Let your creativity shine through but be careful of items that are overly distracting and keep the background minimal because YOU are the focus! Many universities and professional organizations today provide opportunities for free headshots. Take advantage of this! In fact, at the University of Cincinnati offers this to students.- both undergrads and graduate students - if your a UC student head to the Bearcat Promise Career Studio (Tangeman University Center Room 310) anytime during posted walk-in hours and the whole process takes about 5 minutes. The Career Studio also offers job search and resume preparation advice. #cosmeticchemist #cosmeticscience #careeradvice #gobearcats #nextliveshere

Experienced Art Director/Senior Graphic Designer | Branding, Advertising & Digital Media Pro | Passionate about turning ideas into art
🎢 Story Time: Join me on this roller coaster ride of job hunting! In June 2023, I had a phone interview for a Senior Art Director position at a company where I had previously done contract work. During the interview, they mentioned that former colleagues had spoken highly of me. Exciting, right? After a week, I eagerly reached out to inquire about the status of my application. The company responded, explaining that due to some interviewing team members being on vacation, an update would be provided by the end of the week regarding the next steps. Then came an unexpected twist. The company informed me that, since I had freelanced with them before through a recruiting agency, they would need to pay a fee to bring me on board. Unfortunately, their budget couldn't accommodate both the role and the recruiter fee. Undeterred, I took matters into my own hands and emailed the recruiting company, explaining my situation and requesting reconsideration of the fee. After a series of back-and-forth emails, I received some good news in July. The recruiting agency agreed to waive the recruiter fee! With newfound hope, I promptly informed the company of this positive development. They expressed their excitement and mentioned they would reach out to the managers who are handling contracts with the recruiting agency. Alas, the story takes an unexpected turn. In a final email, the company regretfully informed me that they had decided to move forward with other candidates. 🙁 While the waived recruiter fee inadvertently caused delays in the interview process and I believe impacted the final decision, I want to take a moment to express my immense gratitude to my former colleagues who supported me throughout this journey. The roller coaster ride of job hunting can be filled with unexpected twists and turns. While I'm disappointed that I didn't secure the job, I can't deny feeling a sense of frustration and sadness. Job hunting can be an emotionally taxing experience, but I strive to maintain a positive outlook and learn from each opportunity that comes my way. Stay tuned for the next chapter of this exhilarating journey! 🚀 #JobHuntingChronicles #NeverGiveUp #GratefulForSupport

It was 4:00 on Saturday when I was having my nails done and a woman walked in asking for a manicure, without an appointment. They told her they were booked to come back on Monday. 30 minutes later a woman walks in for a manicure, without an appointment, and they took her. 🧐 PIVOT Timing isn’t everything, but it’s something. If you are searching for a new position and told that a company already identified a few candidates and aren’t entertaining meeting more, don’t give up on it just yet. Stay in touch with the recruiter or the hiring manager. Sometimes a company, recruiter, or nail place, get overwhelmed with their load and shut the door but once traffic opens, they will take on more. If you want it, keep an eye on it, you never know. #career #jobsearch #interviewing
