The landscape of TMS is a crowded and confusing space. Here’s what we regularly hear from prospective clients: “OK, we get that Dispatch Science is cloud-based. So is every other TMS we’re considering switching to. Don’t all these cloud systems offer the same benefits? Cloud is cloud, right?” Sure, in as much as a crop duster and a F-18 military jet are both planes ✈️ or a candle and an LED bulb both give light or 💡 a sailboat and a yacht are both boats! ⛴   So Wrong! Our crazy, complex world uses “cloud” as a blanket term for software that you access over the internet. That means legacy vendors can take their old systems, stick them on a virtual server at Azure or AWS and call it a “virtualized cloud” The true benefits of cloud are achieved when using a true-cloud solution architecture that is: Multi-tenant, platform-as-a-service (PaaS) with dynamic resource scaling, replicated, and secured. 💪 This is the only way you get the level of contingencies, failovers, redundancies, backups, recoveries, and business-critical protection that avoids a day long TMS outage from seriously disrupting your operations. Upon discovering a customer success story detailing American Airlines' transition to the cloud and adoption of #Azure along with Azure SQL Managed Instances, it became evident that while lifting and shifting may serve as an initial migration step, the real gains lie in modernizing applications to leverage native cloud technologies whenever feasible. It’s a great read. “American Airlines wanted to move its real-time customer data domain from an aging on-premises datacenter to the cloud. After evaluating several possible routes, the airline’s Customer Hub team chose Microsoft Azure SQL Managed Instance because it satisfied every one of their demanding requirements. The complex process unfolded in multiple phases to shift both data and apps to Azure, resulting in greater flexibility, automated maintenance, and alignment with the airline’s transformation goals so that American Airlines can deploy solutions to customers faster. “
