👀 Copycat alert… or is it? Victoria's Secret is under fire (again) for allegedly copying Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty 2019 fashion show for the trailer of their upcoming runway show. While the window staging design isn’t anything new, the fact that the two brands are direct competitors definitely raised some eyebrows. But how did Savage X, a brand that was only founded 5 years ago, overtake an industry giant like Victoria's Secret? 👉 It filled a niche and a market gap that Victoria's Secret failed to account for at the time 👉 It took advantage of changing consumer preferences and catered to what people wanted 👉 It revolutionized a market that has been historically accused of being fatphobic, racist, and transphobic. It makes sense why people are quick to point fingers at Victoria's Secret’s latest trailer. They seem to be busy playing catchup in a market that Savage X has now taken over. With #Barbie, the movie, setting viewing records, it's also one of the toy industry’s most profitable product placement films ever made. The doll’s maker Mattel, Inc. will no doubt be mining its other assets for feature films besides its successful track record in past movies featuring #HotWheels and others. Expect other company #CEOs and #CMOs beyond the toy industry to be pressured to find ways they can create similar #marketing buzz and sales spikes for their intellectual properties, creating another distribution channel in the form of the feature film. That Barbie is the unlikely heroine and possible social changemaker for millions of women and girls around the globe is ironic, perhaps helping name and shame the outliers on gender pay gaps, glass ceilings and work-life balance. Could Barbie in all her various skin tones and body shapes serve as an icon for companies needing to make real inclusion a reality? Quite possibly.
