Some personal thoughts on the closure of Slocum & Ferris, my first-ever employer. It takes courage to be a small business owner these days, and especially in foodservice. Bravo to Corey for his three years of dedication at Slocum & Ferris and the Saint John City Market. Thank you also to Betsy, Mike and the rest of the Slocum's crew. Since our committee completed the City Market Strategic Plan, I haven't had any formal role at the Market, but I do occasionally share ideas with the City on how this Uptown gem can fulfil its potential. There's no question, local foot traffic has taken a big hit. Work-from-home, empty office space and punishing food costs make it tough for lunch vendors to break even. However, I agree with Corey's comments to CBC that in the long run, the Market can still succeed. Noon-hour traffic is down. But as new residential projects are completed, more people will live Uptown than we've seen in decades. Compared to commuters, these folks will offer the possibility of business later in the afternoon and evening. Plus, they'll be in walking distance, which means less parking demand per customer. The Strategic Plan is ambitious, and I know that Market supporters will disagree on certain points. But I strongly believe that the great majority of its proposals are straightforward, common-sense goals that all residents can endorse. The 150th anniversary of the Market building will be in 2026, making it a perfect occasion for projects to make this National Historic Site shine. My hope is that City officials and grassroots teams alike will start planning on how to mark this milestone (and to get some provincial and federal funding to do it!). In my opinion, there are three key ways we can see the Market through this transition: 1. Keep supporting the businesses in the Market. This time of year is always the hardest, so your business will be truly appreciated. 2. In a thoughtful and constructive way, tell local elected officials and City staff that you want to see the Market thrive. Share your ideas on how to make this happen. Think of how you can contribute to the 150th anniversary celebrations. 3. And in my view, the **very best** thing you can do is to sell your own products at the Market! While it may be tough to rent a stall year-round, it's not expensive to get a small space for a few Saturdays or cruise ship days. New pop-up vendors help drive interest in the Market as a whole (and can make good money with the right product!). Let's acknowledge the vendors who have kept the City Market going since the pandemic, often at real personal cost. But let's also act to make the Market the welcoming and prosperous community hub we know it can be! https://lnkd.in/ghDRSuEY.

Buc-ee's, Ltd. has added State of Ohio to the list of states it’s targeting with its massive c-stores, according to a Facebook post by Jeff Gore, mayor of Huber Heights, Ohio. The location will be up for informal review with the city’s planning commission on Aug. 15. No approval has yet been given and no target opening date has yet been announced for this location. The Lake Jackson, Texas-based retailer’s stores are mostly found in its home state, but in recent years, the company has made a huge push into other parts of the country. Margins and sales continue to be a challenge for many enterprises.
